Both Google Chrome, and Mozilla crash anytime I try to use a search engine. I can type in a topic in the search bar, but when I press enter, the browser crashes, without fail, every fucking time! I've ran multiple antivirus scans, defragged, cleaned the shit out of my PC... still does it.

    Anybody have any clue?

What OS are you using Scott?

    Windows XP.

And yes, it could be from all the gaping midget holes clogging up the cache...

I have seen addons cause problems with browsers. You can click start-run and type "firefox -safe-mode" without the quotations. That will start firefox with all of its addons disabled. Then see if you can use the search engines without it crashing your browser. I have had a buggy flash cause problems similar to this between chrome and firefox. After updating it, that fixed the problem. Let me know how your testing go?

Try 2 other browsers.... Opera would be one... I assume you still have IE too...

Is it just one search engine, or all of them?

Another you might try. Hit F8 while booting, and try "safe mode with network support"..and see what that does.

Edit: Reading on another forum...some who had the same problem fixed it with this: Go to start>>type in the search box "cmd">>right click and run as administrator>type sfc /scannow...let it run, then reboot.

Opera works, as does IE. But I hate them both. Opera runs super slow on my comp, and IE... well, it IE. Nuff said

Try Google Chrome. It will probably work well for a while before it develops the same defect. Some browsers have such a complex relationship with your operating system that just reinstalling them doesn't work. Internet Explorer is the classic example of that, you pretty much have to start over and rebuild your hard drive if you've got a really serious problem with IE.

This could be a virus/worm/spyware/whatever problem. I've been using Kaspersky anti-virus software for two years and I'm quite satisfied with it. I had to call in my PC technician when my system speed decreased to the point that it was frustrating. I had been using Norton and he found so much spyware on my system that it was amazing that it could still run at all.

    Run a repair.

You don't mention the OS So I'll assume it's XP SP2 or later.

Disable active anti virus scanning first, right click over the icon down by the clock in the lower right of the desktop and choose to disable the anti virus..

Go to start>run, clear out anything in the text box, type 'cmd' (no quotes) and click 'ok'. This will open DOS, or the command line. If this is Vista make sure to start the command line with administrative privileges. (The easiest way is to use the type cmd in the Vista Start Run box and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead of just pressing Enter. This will open the Command Prompt in Administrator mode.)

Type 'sfc /scannow' (with no quotes) this command runs the most complete check and repair of IE and windows possible, including all internet and network related stuff, and does a protected file scan for corruption or malfeasance.

If it prompts you for the windows XP CD, you have significant OS corruption, insert the CD and repair.

    Reboot.

Then run a complete reset of all tcp/ip and socket management on the OS.

Go to start>run, 'cmd' should still be in the text box, if not type it again, click 'ok' This will again open DOS, I mean the 'command line'. Remember administrative privilege on Vista listed above.

    Type:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt (enter)
    netsh winsock reset (enter)

The first command, if entered correctly, gives NO feedback it simply moves to a new line. Then type the second line. The 'winsock' command, if entered correctly, will tell you to reboot, do so.

    Test browsing.

Tried it, it prompted me for the disk a number of times, but I don't currently have it. It's packed away in storage. I'll go dig around for it and see what happens.

I get these messages. It prompts me to insert the second recovery disk, but no such disk ever came with the computer.

Well I just clicked cancel and it finished the scan. id the rest of what you suggested, and the browser still crashes when I try to search using any search engine. Also, I forgot to mention earlier; when I conect to the internet, it knocks out my soundcard. When I start the computer up, the sound works, but once I connect to the internet, and try to play an audio file, I get the following message

Yeah your OS was seriously corrupted just as I thought, this is why it prompted for the disc to copy over critical system files that were corrupted/altered/missing.

A reformat will get you right.
