    "religious" music

i've been wanting to start a thread about "religious" music, in particular the christian music genre, ever since sandy stated in another thread a while ago, that this was all she ever listened to.

    and i thought...

i mean, i like amazing grace, i like elvis, i like some gospel, and bluegrass, but this christian pop that i assumed sandy was referring to...ugh. i thought it matched her personality. and i'm pretty sure it's a prerequisite that a band sucks before it can be labeled this genre.

i don't want anyone to misconstrue this as preaching, because that's not what i want to do. but i know i've mentioned to all of you before, that god has often used music to "talk" to me, and so i thought it would be fun to try to demonstrate this, and also to point out, that the music he's chosen to do that with doesn't totally suck.

i would also like to invite others who may have received a message in this way to post here.

so i'll start with an awesome band called black light burns. the front man for this band is also the bass player for limp bizkit. i'm not a fan of limp bizkit really, but black light burns is definitely worth listening to. when i listen to this song called "4 walls", i hear a very christian message...

    "4 Walls"

Go for the jugular, cut the vein
And kiss it away, kiss it away, kiss it away
    Everything that brings me pain

It's not as hard to bend in the end
So let's do it again, do it again, do it again
And this feels so new to be infecting you

    These 4 walls are blistering
    I watch the paint peel
But I cannot wake from this dream
    'cause this is not love
    This is not clean
I'll keep digging down deeper in you
Until I find what makes you scream

I get a little aroused as it dies:
That look in your eyes, look in your eyes,
    Look in your eyes
As I begin to get under your skin

And now I know why I do
Take it out on you, take it on you
'cause you always take it on the chin
That's what you get for letting me in

    These 4 walls are blistering
    I watch the paint peel
But I cannot wake from this dream
    'cause this is not love
    This is not clean
I'll keep digging down deeper in you
Until I find what makes you scream

    here's the video...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttqa4ai2ZYI

in regards to the message, the first verse has "christ" written all over it. while the rest of the song describes what god does to me through christ, the 4 walls being my flesh. the second verse talks about how he changes me. the third verse about the crucifixion of my flesh. the fourth that it hurts, but you let him do it anyway. and the chorus sums up how i feel about my flesh pretty well. it's not love. it's not clean.

can anyone else relate to that?

did you notice he's making out with a guy wearing a devil mask in the video?

what do you think of the band? pretty good right?

this is linkin park's latest single called "the catalyst"...

    God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun
    And it can't be outfought
    It can't be outdone
    It can't be outmatched
    It can't be outrun
    No

And when I close my eyes tonight
    To symphonies of blinding light
    God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun
    Like memories in cold decay
    Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky

    God save us everyone
Will we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns
For the sins of our hands
    The sins of our tongues
    The sins of our fathers
    The sins of our young
    No

And when I close my eyes tonight
    To symphonies of blinding light
    God save us everyone
Will we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns
    Like memories in cold decay
    Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky

    Like memories in cold decay
    Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky

Lift me up, let me go

    God bless us everyone
We're a broken people living under loaded gun
    And it can't be outfought
    It can't be outdone
    It can't be outmatched
    It can't be outrun

the video premiered today i think...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAPXbypyaq0

i think the message is self-explanatory. but it's fun to point out that linkin park is one of the most popular mainstream rock bands today.

it's also worth mentioning that water is often used to symbolize something mystic or spiritual, like baptism.

    Mick & Keef:

    "I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead;
    I fell down, to my feet and I saw they bled;
    I frowned, at the crumbs of a crust of bread;
    I was crowned, with a spike right through my head;
    yeah, yeah, yeah;
But it's alright, now, in fact it's a gas..."

    What's this song really about?

i've read mick jagger quoted as saying it's "nasty words for a dirty riff". also that it's named after keith richard's gardener. theories that it's about heroin.

Mick Jagger: "It's about having a hard time and getting out. Just a metaphor for getting out of all the acid things."

The name "Jack Flash" came about after Keith and Mick were up all night trying to think of a song. Keith's gardener's footsteps woke them up. When Mick asked what the noise was Keith said it was "Jack Flash" outside. The gardener's name was Jack Dyer.

Hmm. Back when the song was written there was something of a meme about drug use and being 'crucified' by a habit.

That is, with the idea of a drug addict being a sacrificial lamb of sorts. I know, it's fucked up, but so were the seventies.

At times I've used this song as a 'soliloquy' to God:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziThY...eature=related

    This one addressed to Jesus:

And have imagined this one as God speaking to me:

you have excellent taste in music. incubus is another one of my favorites. the song "warning", and the video speak to me because i can empathize with the girl. i went through some weird spiritual stuff several years ago that had apocalyptic overtones.

It's been very rare for me to get a message from God through what is termed "christian" music. The whole concept of making money from Christianity is repulsive to me. Most of the heart moving songs i have come accross have come from other genre.

This song is from a band called Lighthouse family it really touched me,

I think the guy was singing to His girl. But for me it was God singing to me.

When you're close to tears remember
Some day it'll all be over
One day we're gonna get so high
And though it's darker than December
What's ahead is a different colour
One day we're gonna get so high

    And at
    The end of the day
    remember the days
When we were close to the edge
And we'll wonder how we made it through the night
    The end of the day
    remember the way
We stayed so close till the end
We'll remember it was me and you

'Cause we are gonna be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love

Don't you think it's time you started
    Doing what we always wanted
One day we're gonna get so high
    'Cause even the impossible
is easy when we got each other
One day 'we're gonna get so high

    And at
    The end of the day
    remember the days
when we were close to the edge
And we'll wonder how we made it through the night
    The end of the day
    remember the way
We stayed so close to till the end
We'll remember it was me and you.

'Cause we are gonna be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love (x2)

    High, high, high, high.(x2)

    And at
    The end of the day
    remember the days
when we were close to the edge
And we'll wonder how we made it through the night
    The end of the day
    remember the way
We stayed so close to till the end
We'll remember it was me and you.

'Cause we are gonna be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love (x3)

Next one comes from an old band called The Call. this song came out in 1983 but i heard it around the time of the Jihadist attack on NY.

Walls Came Down by The Call

    Walls Came Down

    Well they blew their horns
    And the walls came down
    They'd all been warned
    And the walls came down
    They stood there laughing
    They're not laughing anymore
    The walls came down

    Yahhh

    Sanctuary fades
    Congregation splits
    Nightly military raids
    The congregation splits
    It's a song of assassins
    Ringing in your ears
    We got terrorist thinking
    Playing on fears

    Well

    Well they blew their horns
    And the walls came down
    They'd all been warned
    But the walls came down
I don't think there are any Russians
    There aint no Yanks
    Just corporate criminals
    Playing with tanks

    Ya-ya-ya-ya ya-ya-ya
    Ya-ya-ya-ya ya-ya-ya
    Ya-ya-ya-ya ya-ya-ya
    Ya-ya-ya-ya ya-ya-ya

This next one is from an Irish singer called Enya. I love all her songs but this one hit me right at the correct time. It was after i talked to an Egyptian ex army officer who had come to believe Jesus and was in hiding, His family was trying to get him killed.

ENYA How can i keep from Singing

My life goes on in endless song
    above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
    that hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
    I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
while to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
how can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
and hear their death knell ringing,
when friends rejoice both far and near
how can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
our thoughts to them are winging,
when friends by shame are undefiled
how can I keep from singing?

Next one is from an old guy named Rod Stewart. I must confess i hate his music mostly and this one was an old one that was around when i was a little kid.

One day i was feeling very sad and depressed about the end times. and this came on the radio. As i was listening to this song i was folding up towels. and at the end of the song i was folding up an old beach towel and it had a message on it that struck my heart and lifted me up so high . It was two symbols followed by a "You". An "EYE" a "Love heart" and then "You"

    Sailing Rod Stewart

    I am sailing
    I am sailing
    home again 'cross the sea.
    I am sailing stormy waters
to be near you to be free.
    I am flying
I am flying like a bird 'cross the sky
I am flying passing high clouds to be with you to be free.

    Can you hear me
can you hear me thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.
    Can you hear me
can you hear me thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.

    We are sailing
we are sailing home again 'cross the sea.
VVe are sailing stormy waters to be near you to be free.

Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free . . .

This next one came to me while i was serching for info on the maconic nature of the USA. the song to me is all about the USA the maconic kingdom.

When i finaly got to see the video i could tell that the band was singing about things ecological. But when i heard it the message was very different.

Ship of Fools By World Party:

    We're setting sail

To the place on the map

From which no one has ever returned

Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool

By the light of the crosses that burn

Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace

And the gold and the cotton and pearls

It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need

You sail away from the light of the world

    On this trip, baby

    You will pay tomorrow

    You gonna pay tomorrow

    You will pay tomorrow

    CHORUS:

    Save me

    Save me from tomorrow

I don't want to sail in this ship of fools

    Save me

    Save me from tomorrow

I don't want to sail in this ship of fools

I want to run and hide

    Right now...

    Avarice and greed

Are gonna drive you over the endless sea

They will leave you drifting in the shallows

Or drowning in the oceans of history

    Traveling the world

You're in search of no good

But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom

    Like you knew you would

    Using all the good people

    For your galley slaves

    As your little boat struggles

    Through the warning waves

    But you don't pay

    You will pay tomorrow

    You gonna pay tomorrow

    You gonna pay tomorrow

    (CHORUS)

    Where's it coming from?

    Where's it going to?

It's just a ship of fools...

    Here we go...

    All aboard...

i have mixed feelings about the money thing. in the most general sense, i think the only reason we need money is because of greed. wouldn't it be great if instead of producing things for a profit, we produced things for their intrinsic value alone? if cost wasn't a consideration in the production of these things? if everyone was free to enjoy and appreciate whatever they desire without money, or even morality being an issue?

i bring up morality because i think in a big way, particularly in regards to religion, it's just such a farce. all of these moral judgements handed down about how you should dress, and how you should speak, and where you should live, and who you should be friends with, and what you should read, or watch on tv, or enjoy in the arts, including an appreciation of music. it seems to me, they don't want people to be able to explore themselves, explore the world, and form their own opinions. it seems like they don't want people to be free. imo, freedom is what christianity is all about. that and communion.

so freedom and communion is the message, and yet they segregate themselves. i know we're supposed to be different. it's impossible not to be. and i know we're supposed to be the light. but it's really hard to shine on anything when all you're concerned about is isolating yourself from everyone and every thing you hate and are afraid of.

and that's exactly where this christian music genre comes from...the demand of a part of society that wishes to isolate and segregate itself. and it's hollow, and it's lifeless, and it's bad. and because it's so bad, it's not shining a light on anyone.

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?

    Everybody!
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

    That's it!
