i dont really have an oppinion of wich is better because it would be biast if i were to say based purely on a martial aspect, pirates were good at what they did (steal/pillage) ninjas were good at what they did, (assassinate people in high power) i would say that the shinobi warriors were more skilled in battle and combat and would have actually made good pirates themselves, ninja were good at stealing and breaking and entering, it was one of there many trates of expertise, i actually study some ninjutsu and ninpo, wich has alot to do with there combat skills, there are actually rumours about shinobi warriors beccomming japanese pirates and trying to envade small towns in china, some of the shaolin monks who were the emporers personal bodygaurds back in the old dynastys actually had run ins with japanese pirates, and fought them on several accounts, that would be interesting for a hyperthetical battle, the ninja clans VS the shaolin temples, i would say in straight forward combat crew VS crew the shaolin would be victorious, but in a long fought battle lasting years the ninja would win, using stealth and there lack of honour in battle would give them the advantage, much like how the samurai fell tot he ninja, because of there ideals in the bushido way of honour, (big draw back in war, maybe not in a 1 on 1 fight though) the ninja actually learn alot more than martial arts they are very well educated for what they do, sword fighting, spear fighting, unnarmed combat, stealth training, throwing weapons/ projectile, staff fighting, geogoraphy, meteorology, (dont know if i have spelled that correctly) espionage/infiltration, (same goes for that) explosives, they have clan order, are sworn to secrecy within there own clan, they follow strict rules, and are very protective tot here own like a family not a soldiers unit, there is much more i know about the ninja but i will stop going on now because of my seemingly obsessive nature towards anythign related to martial arts, i dont know much about pirates apart from television so i cant say much, but i do know alot about ninjutsu and the shinobi/ninja. peace.
Interesting point, but isn't the question more who is the best? There is more to life than fighting and I have never seen a ninja get close and personal with a bottle of rum or a woman, or both at the same time.

the modern ninja still exists, only now he has, night vision goggles, body armour, and a 9mm with a silencer, and is called a yakuza, just an underground mobb, who assassinate people and do crimes for pay and other reasons, groups of assassins still are in japan to this very day and all around the world, and people still learn the combat and stealth arts of the shinobi, ninpo and ninjutsu is still around, peace.
pirates have no need for all that pirates will drink a ninja under the table, party all night into the next day and breed like rabbits
and breed like rabbits then abandon their progeny, who will hate them for it. The children will hunt down their fathers (the boys). But then see the life of a pirate and become a pirate themselves.
I've always seen the ninja/pirate debate not as actual ninja v pirate but as allegory for socialism v capitalism.
I wonder what a real modern day ninja would be like? Yes- I know they have a few little pretentious 'ninja' schools in japan, but I wonder what the true equivilant counterculture would be like? Who are the modern day equivilant to the samurai? The police maybe?
As someone said earlier, ninja's were essentially pissed off farmers. Workers rising against their feudal warlords. Marx's proletariat revolting. Pirates, on the other hand, rely on their own prowess and strength to take what others have through sheer cunning and force.

No, I would classify pirates as socialists, taking goods and monwy from capitalist pigs and redistribute them amongst the people. Themselves
LOL Well, I looked around and there is a movie about this check it out http://nvp.kavefish.net/ I guess, I will use this to figure it out. It has everything love, comedy, and pirates getting there butts whooped in the beggining.
