Thanks for being non-critical of my ignorance. I also thank you for inviting me as a friend, on this site. And only after a couple days of posting. I humbly accepted. You were the first and only to do so. So, I thank you Cluelusshusband.
    Peace,
    Gremmie.

    Hey Gremmie,

Even though I am a little newer in the bathwater than yourself, I note that you also are a new member here, so whilst you would kindly pass me the soap, I welcome you!!!

    Firstly, welcome to this forum.

One has to question why or how you could make such a comment when you have not tread through the "hallowed halls of this institution". At present you have only 4 posts to your name on this site and all 4 are in this thread.

I welcome you as well.. I guess we are basically strangers in a strange land here. But then again, as we are the "NEWBIES" today, there is always tomorrow... BTW, here's the soap...

First off.. Hi Bells, I have read many of your posts over the last several months.. That brings me to my point.. You mentioned this new member only has 4 posts, all on this thread. Cluelusshusbund mentioned maybe our new member may have read many threads, before making any posts. I am also a new member, though I do have many more posts, than the "Newbie" LOL. But I have read thousands of posts,on hundreds of threads BEFORE becoming a member. Actually, I have been reading old threads for just over 3 months now. And, pretty much 12-16 hours a day. I was injured a few months ago, the 'puter is pretty much my babysitter now. Sorry for rambling. I guess my point is, just because someone is a new member, doesn't mean they have no right to their opinions. And I must say, I have come across this myself. I'm seen as a "Newbie" Yet I have probably read more threads than a great many oldtime members have. Not really sure where I'm going with this rant... But, maybe I'm just saying... Never read a book by its cover. We may be new here, doesn't mean we have nothing to offer.
    Peace,
    Gremmie

That is not exactly something that you should want to disclose or be proud of.

You have been injured at home with the internet to keep you busy for that long and you spend 12-16 hours a day apparently reading old threads on this site? Unbelievable! And I mean that quite literally.

Newbie is not exactly what comes to my mind at present.

Look, everyone is free to their opinions. However when someone has only been here for a few days or even reading for a few months, does not mean that you actually understand or know everything much about how this forum is run or about its members.

Then maybe you should spend the apparent 12-16 hours that you claim you spend on this forum and post more and participate more in the whole forum.

Thank you for your welcome, now if I may make a couple of observations here?

Firstly, I hope you're not forgetting about the REAL point of my post - that attitudes of members/posters such as elitism, arrogance and aggressiveness tend, over time to drag discussion into the doldrums, which seemed to me as the complaint underlying the thread. I personally find it curious - on the other site at least; that aggressiveness and foul language for instance seem more acceptable than a fresh view or concept.

Secondly I admitted to being very new, so I hope you are not sayng I have broken some rule for posting so soon after joining, or for (so far) limiting my comments to just the one thread - have I?

Third, the comment I made was about a simple observation, of attitudes I have previously witnessed in abundance on another forum, and am already (even after just a few hours) seeing the very same thing in a few posts I've read here. I have to begin somewhere don't I? So I hope you are not suggesting I should commence by presenting as being blind???? That would be quite a dishonest start for me to make, wouldn't you think?

So my comments have been honest expressions about what I have; so far been looking at, even though I did NOT single anyone out for special attention, other than for the warm welcomes.

Hopefully things will look up as my experience on this site continues. Time will tell I guess and thanx again.

Wow Bells... Thanks for the warm welcome. Who are YOU to judge me? Who Are YOU to know what I know? I knew from the first day I ever stumbled across this site, that if I ever registered, and ever dared post my thoughts, that I might be attacked. But this, I didn't expect. You didn't just attack my thoughts... You decided to attack me as a person. A person you certainly don't know. I have several posts in Sci-Forums, and have had a few critisisms aimed at me.. I found them all civil... Untill your comments. You basically called me a liar, I don't appreciate that. You tell me how I should spend my time. Again, I don't appreciate that. I was in a car crash back in May. I have 2 broken vertabrae in my back. I cant do my job just yet. I hope to soon though. But, in the meantime, I am house-bound. This is not my idea of fun. As I am not much of TV fan, I started surfing the web. Somehow I came across this site. I started reading posts/threads. I'm sorry, I just found some some topics interesting. And I just kept reading threads. Yes, up to 16 hours a day. I didn't know this was criminal behavior.. I can't really get around these days, so, I just sit at my computer. I find Sci-forums "entertaining" Again I apologize. I didn't know I had to check in with anyone to read posts. I registered a couple days ago.. I figured OK I know how this works now and registered. And, I have several posts over the last couple of days. Hell, a few members even made me feel welcome. Well, except for you. So, like I said, you just don't like newbies, cool, ignore me. But, I have no plan/intent to leave this forum, just because 1 person doesn't want me here. If I get banned, well, those are the breaks.
    Peace,
    Gremmie.
    P.S.
"newbie" isn't exactly what comes to mind at the moment" What EXACTLY did you mean by that crack/insult?

I have neither attacked you or been rude to you. You have made comments about this site and its members and I have advsied you to please refrain from judging this site and its members until you have been here a bit longer and posted in a variety of forums. How you spend your time during your recovery is really none of my concern or my business. Now this may sound callous and for that I apologise. I am sorry that you injured yourself and find yourself in this predicament. This must be a very trying time for you. But you are not alone in having personal problems. But how you deal with that is really not my business - in that I don't really need to know.

But I have to be honest and say that I find it astounding that someone who is surfing the web for that amount of time per day can only stay in this site and read old posts during that time.

You are attempting to portray yourself as the victim here.. of having been attacked because you are new, etc. From your first post in this thread, you have hinted about hoping you would be safe. As though you were afraid that something bad would happen to you here. And then we basically have another "newbie" refer to the members on this site as having some sort of complex of superiority, arrogant, dismissive of others, not to mention conceited. Not to mention pass judgement on the moderators and administrators of this site. This is meant to endear new people how exactly? We don't care if you are new. But if anyone is going to spout anything like that, then at least have something to back it up.

My advice is to stay here a bit longer and post and actually get to know the people here and have them get to know you before you can assess everyone here as you already have done. Because if you (or anyone else who is new) enter this forum and judge everyone as you have above, the natives (all of the us members) won't take too kindly to it. We are a motley group of people from all walks of life and contrary to what you may believe, we don't always bite. Those we do bite are those we know who can take it and bite back. But if someone new enters this site and from the get go starts to criticise everyone here, then we don't take too kindly to that. You must understand that a fair few of us have been posting here for many years, some going on over 10 years and we do know each other on this site well enough. We don't always get along.. hell.. we rarely get along, but I would defend any of those I have known for years and don't get along with from any new member who has decided to take pot shots at them without having gotten to know them first. Many of us have a history with each other on this site and it's not always a good history. But no one should enter the fray and from the start criticise the members. That is not fair. We give new people a fair go. It is up to the new people to do the same.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

As for this thread topic. If anyone finds this site boring, I have to query why they are posting here at all?..

    ** Edit **

I had to correct this as I had misread a previous post of yours and mistook what you were trying to quote as your own post. I basically accused you of things you have not said and for that I apologise and have since corrected this post. One little trick you can use if you want to quote someone is to have the same page open in another tap or window and copy and paste directly and use the quote function in the interface that way, that is if you are unsure about how to use the multi quote function.

Do you qualify someone who has been lurking on this forum for months and apparently reading it as a "newbie"?

On the actual subject of the forums, Every year during late July and Early August there is a slow period, this is usually caused because for most places (based upon the Northern Hemisphere being more populated than that of the Southern) are having their Summer breaks. This is where kids (pre-teens before you all get upset) are off from school pestering parents and teenagers are usually out and about "socialising in the real world".

What also adds to this is the fact that some people only really get to surf the internet at college/university compared to home, perhaps they don't have internet access at home (although this is slowly changing) or perhaps they have too many real world commitments at home compared to that of being on campus.

You'll notice an increase in activity around the first week of September, where you'll have old members returning in their new semester and new members joining while they attempt to search for relevant information to their syllabus.
    )

Obviously there will always be a finger pointed suggesting that the membership has degraded, perhaps because of this or that boycott because of this or that member being banned or because of an abusive moderator etc. A reality check however just provides clue that most of this is just egotism portrayed by someone trying to sensationalise and become the centre of attention. (In fact this is the main reason while you might on occasion glance a moderator seeming hostile towards a member, when in reality they are just fed up with a Drama queen attempting to entrap the moderator into some sort of personal play for amusement.)

Just bare with the quiet periods, if it gets too quite then why not have a quick search for some news articles to "inspire" discussion topics etc. (Just remember to post only a small excerpt and link to the actual article and an opening comment for discussion perhaps in the style of applying your thought on the subject)

Did you expect it to mean something else?

Are you trying to make this place more lively by trying to poke a stick where a stick should not be poked?

But I am serious. We have an individual who has apparently spent the better part of 3 or so months reading all the posts in this forum. Can you classify them as a "newbie"? Is that the term that comes to mind in this case?

To be honest with you, I think it is kind of sad. And not in a bad way. But we have an individual who is apparently recovering from a severe injury and he/she can find all of us that entertaining or even mildly interesting for that length of time.. every day. I mean we are a sorry bunch of people on this forum. Do you think we can be that entertaining for that long? I am surprised Gremmie has not gone completely insane.
