I'm about to go to college. My goal is to take part in finding a new, cheap way to get into space so that the privalege is not restricted to just MIT tripple-masters boyscouts (no offense to them, god bless 'em...) who just happen to get accepted by NASA to fly their multi-billion-dollar shuttles. I want to help make space more mainstream. I can't afford Embry-Riddle so I'm studying aerospace at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
To any current or former aerospace employees, what the hell am I getting myself into here!?! Any tips? Thanks much

Might wanna talk with some of the Drury University students in springfield Missouri they have students every year helping nasa design stuff, and a few of there students have even gotten to take rides in there airplane that they train in zero gravity on.

If you want to innovate, the best thing is to start by getting a degree. Without it no-one will listen, with it they occasionally do.

Understand why things are done the way they are, why redundancy is used, when and why mcd is used etc.

Keep an eye out for odd ideas and examine them, figure out their good and bad points, and why theyre not in use today. Thats really key, many ideas that look good are not used; in every case theres some reason why, you need to understand the field well to innovate successfully.

Get Boeing or Lockheed jobs as theyll teach you about the kind of realities that arent taught at uni for some reason, and will get you far more chance of being listened to.

Keep reading, keep following, keep experimenting. Innovation is NOT an easy thing, but if youre keen enough its possible. Thats all.

One of the most powerful methods is to keep trying to come up with new ideas, on anything at all. Go over them, see the pros, look at the problems, refine them etc. Doesnt matter what the idea is, any subject at all, write it down, go over it, write and write. This is absolutely the best way to teach yourself to be a serious innovator.

Finally take a good IQ test now and tell us the results. What you get determines what path to take on this.
