Awhile back I saw this guy on tv who swallowed acid and it burned his whole throat and stomach. Because of this the doctors had to improvise and connect his intestine to his throat. So obviously that means we can live without our stomachs.
Here are my questions:
When people get stomach cancer and it's not treatable, why not do a similar procedure on them?
If you don't have a stomach would you still get hungry and be capable of throwing up?

as painfull as it would be to completly dissovle your stomach in acid it most like would not get rid of the cancer, it would damage more cells cuasing the cancer to grow. (i think) you would still get hungry if you didnt have a stomach cuase hunger is controlled by the mind, im not sure about the throwing up thing, but it would be linked to reverse peristalisis (the movment of food thur the body with tiny muscle contractions)

and im sure they stiched up the guys stomach or something, cuase without the stomach, as acidic as it already IS in there, you wouldnt be fully digesting your food and eventully die from lack of nutrents

FYI, i head it was part of the guys colon they used, not his intestin

Technically, you don't need your stomach for digestion, since the intestines carry out the same type of digestion as the stomach. However, it likely wouldn't be as effecient, and I am sure he would have to take all sorts of supplements.

It is hard to say how that would affect throwing up, since there is no 'pool' of stomach acids just sitting there anymore. However, the intestine may adapt to become stomach like, expanding slightly around the base of the esophagus. Hard to say for sure though.

BTW, reverse peristalsis is the act of vomiting. Peristalsis is the sequential muscle contraction around your esophagus as you swallow.
