It's still just as profane to write "sh*t" as it is to write "shit", it's as if people won't realise what the word was meant to be, then there's no point of it being there in the first place. Either just swear properly or use a different word.
I don't object to cusswords in the body of a post and I occasionally use them myself. But I do not like to see them in the title of a thread because then they show up at a higher search level. We're trying to attract young people with an interest in science, in order to restore this website to what it was several years ago, before it was crawling with trolls and religionists. Many of these precocious young people are so young that their parents occasionally check in on them. If a parent sees the word "fuck" in the list of thread titles of a subforum, she might not feel like encouraging her child to use this website. I think it's more important to attract the members we need, than to fight a battle over freedom of speech regarding four-letter words. Every person or organization only has a finite amount of energy and we all have to carefully choose our battles. I don't want to choose this battle and lose a more important one in the process. Every young person needs to learn the important lesson that there are situations in life where it's okay to use profanity, and there are other situations where it's not. This is as good a place as any to learn that lesson. I don't allow profanity in the thread titles of the Linguistics subforum unless the thread is about a genuine scholarly analysis of the words. Other Moderators make their own decisions but I recommend that they contemplate the points I made above.
There has been random enforcement of arbitrary vulgarity proclamations and users aren't sure what is acceptable and what isn't. I think profanity is fine. It's the content of the post and/or thread that is important. Not whether or not someone says fuck or cunt. Too many people take the lazy way out and immediately ascribe inanity to a post with a cuss word in it. It's easier to make snap judgements based on arbitrary criteria rather than actually read the whole thing in context and make a decision based on actual understanding. The brain is an expensive organ and few care to devote the calories it requires. As to the google search argument, the thread title isn't the only thing searched and indexed. If it were, google would be next to useless.

I never understood the point of censoring profanity anyway, everyone knows what you said. Even small children know that, so then whats the point?
I still don't get the purpose of censorship though. I guess it makes people feel better to not hear the word, or something? It bothers me more when people's mouths don't match up with what we hear. And confuses children to no end. They couldn't figure out how someone could move their mouth one way and say something else it was kinda funny to see, but also kinda sad
