"Pentagon scientists are planning to turn sharks into "stealth spies" capable of tracking vessels undetected, a British magazine has reported."

"They want to remotely control the sharks by implanting electrodes in their brains, The New Scientist says."

This sounds a whole lot like the movie "Deep Blue Sea". I can't believe we actually spend money on these things.

It does sound a bit scifi. How will they know what the sharks are seeing though?

well, as long as you have some kind of sensor system on them, like a camera... it's feasible, though it would seem that if the signal were transmitted the sharks could be found and possibly killed.

it's definately feasible to control their direction. it's been done in people, not in their brains, but by strapping something around their waste. read about it not too long ago.

Exactly, plus if you didn't want whatever the sharks were seeing to be filmed, that would be easy enough to jam too, wouldn't it?

wasn't the military conducting research into using dolphins and whales for a similar purpose during the 60's?

Military use of dolphins is a well-known reality. The US Navy has trained dolphins that are used to monitor underwater activity. They can effectively detect underwater incursions into a bay or port, and there was talk about training them to plant mines on ship hulls. I don’t know if any other country’s military uses dolphins.

Something that always gets me is why something that is supposed to be covert makes the news? Wouldn't it be more effective to keep something like this secret?
Is this misinformation or some form of psy-op?

I wonder how they would get the implant installed when sharks have to be moving constantly in order to breathe.

I remember reading an article that talked about genetically engineering them to have hands so they could grasp the mines and perform tasks that require manual dexterity.

It didn't state that it was a current thing, but a future possibility.

Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact.

Haven't they got remote controlled rats and also hooked isolated rat brains to computers that interpret signals from robotic hardware so the rat brain can actually control stuff? I recall reading that in New Scientist, but I don't remembe rif they had actually done it, or were just trying to.

    golgo 13,

wouldn't it just be cheaper to make an artificial gill and have some scuba guys who live in the water for a few days and plant mines on ships?

in fact, has anyone MADE an artificial gill? that'd be pretty sweet, i'd buy one in a heartbeat

don't think it was the brain. thing I read said something about strapping things around the waist I believe. can't remember. maybe in the rats they did the brain thing and in people it was around the waste. meh.

"Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact."

You have obviously never read anythng by Jules Verne (he proposed sending people to the moon by means of a huge cannon)

    Actually, I have.

You're obviously a poor judge of what people have read.

I believe they got brain cells from a rat to control a flight simulator and successfully avoid crashing. I'm ignorant of the specifics surrounding that experiment, however.
