He won like the karate championship of the world or summit. He can't act tho. I don't rate him highly.
No one rates him highly. Thats the whole point of the jokes really. He's tried so hard to be these honourable rough and tough characters, with a heart of gold and a strong sense of right and wrong, all through his career. He's obviously always wanted to be the man's man kind of actor like clint eastwood or john wayne, but he's just been a cheesey joke. He's been a terrible actor in terrible movies and shows. So the jokes are teasing him, giving him the kind of praise we know he always yearned for but in an over the top sarcastic way to let him know that he sucks and is a failure. Let him know that mention of his name gets a comical reaction as opposed to solemn respect. The jokes are about laughing at the contrast between what he obviously aimed to be and what he actually became, how terribly wrong it all went due to his poor choices, lack of talent and lack of charisma. It's just public humilation at it's finest. And it's not as minor as tripping over or having your fly undone. We witnessed his whole life crash and burn. We witnessed him reach for the stars and fall painfully short, then slip down a chasm upon landing. Rolling and tumbling down right in front of our eyes, his anguished and embarrassed face occassionally surfacing from the ball of dust for us to get a glimpse and enjoy. His suffering makes us feel cosy. It's quite a brutal bloodlust which draw us to this kind of thing. It's the modern substitute for public executions by way of prolonged and peculiar torture. Ofcourse the jokes eventually take on a life of their own and people start liking the jokes so much they almost believe they have respect for chuck norris. And they may really have an ironic admiration for the "chuck norris" character. But no one in real life has respect for chuck norris as a human being. It's like when someone does something really embarrassing and you just give them a smile and a thumbs up. A smile and a thumbs up is a nice thing to give someone usually, and complimenting someone on how tough and rugged they are is a nice thing usually too. But in the context of each of these scenarios, the person getting the "praise" obviously didn't deserve it so it's meant in a sarcastic ironic sort of way. It isn't "kissing ass", more like "kicking while down". I guess it would be difficult for someone who didn't grow up in an english speaking society to understand these little nuances.
Before I read Dr. Lou's little abstract, I had no idea who Chuck Norris was. If I didn't know who he was, he musn't be that famous or important...
