Lou As far as these poor impoverished kids being stuck unable to afford anything better, have you checked out the prices for these things? I have to agree with an earlier post that said for what they spend for these (largely) cosmetic add-ons, they could afford a better car. What makes it even worse is that the money they spend IS usually on the cosmetic stuff. "Yeah! A 6-inch diameter light-up tachometer is far more important than sway bars to keep the thing on the road!" Very rarely do we meet a ricer who, by whatever means, has actually built (or had built) a really slick machine with good handling, torque in all the right places, etc. And yet they still come around looking for races. I don't mind the NOS systems. You do what you have to to leave the other guy behind. We choose not to go NOS on the Camaro at this point, but we may do it for overkill in the Plymouth.
Is the camaro naturally aspirated? I hear it is difficult to find aftermarket internals for the 3.1 V6. These 4cyls with soup can exhaust are (at low RPM) lowering back pressure enough to draw spent gases back into the combustion chamber, leaning out the fuel mixture and slowing the car down. The mufflers might raise hp when the car reaches 7 or 8 thousand RPM but, they cause a loss of power at any RPM below that point. I could go on for days. It can be tough, but some parts are actually used in the Chevy S-10 as well, so if you're into spelunking junkyards it's a good idea to check. One of the hazards of having a 3.1 is that most people who bought the 3rd gens (82-92 Camaros and Firebirds) went with the less expensive 2.8. Small drop in price, big drop in power as I hear it. At least it's not an "Iron Duke", which was the (augh!) 4-cylinder engine for these cars. Big drop in price, big drop in power, big drop in fuel mileage! A good part of getting the extra power out of our beast involved two minor modifications to the intake process. We have the single snorkel that shoots off to the right of the nose. It gave the car an opening just a little bigger than a pair of silver dollars to breathe through. He took a cutter to the filter canister and opened it up by about a third and uses a K&N filter for less restriction. We had tried to go with the dual snorkel from a Firebird, but it was desgined for a V8 and didn't quite mesh with the throttle body too well. Right now we're trying to lay our hands on one of the 4th gen engines. That 3.1 has about 350,000 miles on it. The last really major repair on it was the timing chain. It had about, oooh an inch worth of play! I can't believe that thing never jumped a tooth!

The forces tend to get filled with the guys too, so I don't know how the governments plans to wipe them out is going to work.
LOL We've got a 3.4 we're completely rebuilding right now. Just got it not too long ago, so we still have to strip it down and have the block inspected for flaws, but he's having a ball shopping for the new stuff he wants to put on it. Then he's going to remove the 3.1 and do the same and have it on standby in case he blows the 3.4 up. It'll be like having a hot-swap engine. We'd have the block in the shop right now if the old pick-up hadn't blown it's clutch. We got the transmission put back togther all right, but when it came to lifting that SOB back up to the engine we just couldn't get it to fit back in. We gave up and sent it out for finishing.
