I've read all the way through this thread. I'm actually playing Final Fantasy 7 as we speak and have also watched the movie a load of times. A couple of things I'll just add to the pot:

    - I don't think its all that absurd to see celphones in the movie. You do have the PHS to call your friends and a number of Turks also talk on phones throughout the course of the game. Even after the whole she-bang, I don't think the world as a whole is any worse off than it was beforehand. I never got the impression that there was the "fall" of humanity or human infastructure... only that Midgar got trashed. Then again, I could be reading it wrong.

    - I think the storyline was a natural extension of the game. Even after the events of the game, and the feeling that something else could happen, I never thought that anything could happen to the level of that which happened in the game itself. Not only were our characters too familiar with the world/Mako/Jenova, but for a resurrgence of epic proportions to take place so soon after the world had withstood total annihilation just seemed a bit... nonsensical. I know I wanted to know what happened afterwards but I never went in thinking the storyline would need to match the game itself.

    - Looking back at the game itself, I think the characters were modeled quite nicely. If you watch other Japanese movies (and not just the ones ported to the US and put in our theatres with American actors), you'll notice a very glossy look and feel to all of the characters. That's simply how the Japanese visualize their heroes. There's not anything really wrong with that, it's just how you like your cup of tea. So, for me, they were done very well.

    - I thought it was a great visual treat and a great movie for the non-serious. You really have to watch it with some suspended disbelief. There were so many unbelievable things these characters did in the games that it would have to translate in some way to the movie. Can you think if Cloud or Tifa went down after one good punch? Would make a sucky movie.

So all in all, I really enjoyed it. It's probably one of my favorite movies. I adored the cinematography and the character designs, and found it engrossing after being a fan of the series as a whole. It's exciting to see something I grew up loving (even I grew up before Final Fantasy 7 even came out) hitting the big (or small) screen.
