I am attempting to install a program, but when I start the install a window pops up that says that I need administrator privileges to install the program. I am the admisistrator on my computer! What is the deal? I have tried creating a new account that is the admin, and installing it with that account and it says the same thing. I also have all of my antivirus, firewall, and antispyware software turned off when I am trying to install the software.

Windows XP Home Edition. And the program is like an interactive book. It is called "Kinetics Books: Physics for Engineers and Scientists". Man, I fell like I have tried everything that I know how to do. I even went into the key registry and altered that according to the fourth option on this website:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/quicktips/qt/addadmin.htm . I now have the option of signing on as the admin, but when I attempt to it says that I can't. I guess you can only sign on as the "true" admin in safe mode with XP Home Edition. So I have also tried to sign on with the admin account in safe mode and install the software then, but I get the same message: Administrator privilages required to install software. or something very similiar to that. Please help.

i also had a problem like that with windows millinium turned out my cdrom drive was defective. try using a known good cdrom drive. it would install windows then when i tried to install other software it would tell me i didn't have admin rights. my os doesn't even require admin rights for anything. took it to a shop they replaced cdrom drive. no problems since.

i assume you are installing from the cdrom. another way is to try to install a program from your floppy. if you can then the cdrom drive is bad. if you can't then someone else must provide the answer

I have two cdrom drives and it won't install from either of them. And I do not have a floppy drive, I have migrated to flash memory.

Download a program called TweakUI. There is a checkbox somewhere in the menus that allows you to add the "Administrator" user file as a log-in option at start up. You should then be able to modify programs.

I had the same problem but this didn't work entirely. I was trying to delete Norton and Symantec and had to edit the registry (pain in the a$$). I must have deleted something necessary because I could not reboot and had to use the XP recovery option. THAT fixed the problem - but I had to re-install most of my programs outside of WinXP.

is this a new computer? have you installed software before from the cdrom? your bios may have anti-virus enabled. do you know how to access the bios? on win me pressing f1 at start up takes you there (as soon as you turn your computer on press the key to access you bios) look for anti-virus in the menus and disable it then re-boot normally. does your cdrom show up in my computer? win xp is based on nt technology if that helps in your search. do you have sp2 installed?

i found this on the web:
    - sfc
The system file checker scans protected system files and replaces the ones you (or your applications) hacked beyond repair with the real, official Microsoft versions. Type "sfc" into the command prompt to get a list of options.
    -from "winxp central.com"

    this from msdn knowledge base:
How to Install a Program from a CD-ROM or Floppy Disk
    1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs.
    4. Click either CD or Floppy. Either an "Install Program from Floppy Disk" message or the CD-ROM Wizard prompts you to insert the first installation floppy disk or CD-ROM of the product.
    5. Insert either the floppy disk or CD-ROM, and then click Next. When Setup starts, you must follow the prompts.
    6. When Setup is complete, click Close to close the Add or Remove Programs window.

Note When you use the Add or Remove Programs tool, you can install only the programs that are written for Windows-based operating systems.

    please note the last sentence.

Thanks guys for the help. I got it woriking. Well, I didn't actually get it working. The company resent me another copy of the program and it isntalled fine first try. It must have been something wrong with the cd. By the way, this program is awesome. If anyone is having trouble with freshman level engineering physics, then I would highly recomend this program. It is called Kinetics Books: Physics for Scientists and Engineers.
