Stars slate Bush at relief event

Robin Williams was one of many celebrities at the New York event

Robin Williams and other celebrities have criticised the US government for its response to Hurricane Katrina at a New York benefit for its victims.

Pretending to be a hurricane, Williams said he was heading for Kennebunkport - home of President Bush's family estate - to "see if they respond any quicker".

"The people who got into office forgot about the people," added Bill Cosby.

Elsewhere in the US, performers at the Farm Aid benefit on Sunday pledged to assist Katrina's rural victims.

Saturday's Higher Ground concert, held at New York's Lincoln Center, saw Meryl Streep, Laurence Fishburne, Robert De Niro and others implore viewers to give money to relief charities.

But emotionally-charged performances from Bette Midler, Paul Simon and Diana Krall went hand-in-hand with angry speeches that assigned blame for the tragedy.

"When the hurricane struck, it did not turn the region into a Third World country - it revealed one," said actor Danny Glover.

    Bush Signs Debt-Limit Hike
    WASHINGTON, Nov. 19, 2004

"Everybody took hits. There will be members who aren't totally satisfied, but we we're committed to stay within the budget number."
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Bill Young, R-Fla.
(CBS/AP)*President Bush signed legislation on Friday raising the government's debt limit by $800 billion and clearing the way for Congress to send him an overdue $388 billion spending bill to finance most federal agencies.

The new federal borrowing cap is $8.18 trillion; that's 70 percent the size of the entire U.S. economy, and more than $2.4 trillion higher than the debt Mr. Bush inherited upon taking office in 2001.

The House approved the debt-limit measure Thursday by a near party line 208-204 vote. Its passage was not in doubt because the alternative was a jarring federal default, but it was nonetheless a battlefield for partisan fingerpointing.

Meanwhile, White House and bipartisan congressional bargainers moved to the verge of agreement on the year-end spending package
    expected to total $388 billion.

Well dubba is throwing money in the air like confetti, as he trys his damnest, to make america into a 3rd world country, the american taxpayer is going to have, to foot the bill at some point in a big way, after he finishes his 2nd term in office he should run for president, in africa or argentina, he has all the credentials, he is stupid, corrupt, (iraqi contracts), he listens to no one, he thinks he is right all the time, a perfect candidate for africa.

How can a man be voted in office, on the strenth of, if you vote for john kerry, our country wont be safe, and sept 11 might happen again.

Sept 11 happened on dubbas watch, not kerrys.
John kerry army hero, silver star, came back from vietnam, he dared to criticise the war in vietnam, like any sane man would do, and suddenly kerry is
    weak, no longer a hero.
Meanwhile AWOL Bush is portrayed, as the new action man, better than rambo, or robocop.

Yeah, Hollywood actors are sure the ones that should know about how to run a government, huh? Any time I need to know what's wrong with the world, I'll just ask a Hollywood actor. ...LOL!

    "Hollywood actors, run a government"

    Ronald reagan=president
    Clint eastwood =mayor carmel
    Arnold schwarzenegger= govenor california

warren beaty possible candidate, for next california govenor
I am sure there is lot more references, i dont follow american local politics.

Hell baron americans love hollywood stars running the country, and if clint eastwood, had run for president last time, it would have been a landslide victory for him, hell if they can vote in a b movie actor, like reagan, if someone like clint, or bruce willis ran, it would be a walkover.

America owns jack shit, now if your referring to the old british empire, that covered 3 quarters of the world fact, not bullshit like your statement.

"GW is the smartest US president ever lived. ADMIT IT"

There is about 5billion out there who think he is the dumbest one, in history, fact.

"Your goverment is Run by White House"

The whitehouse could not run a bath,
and they did a hell of a job in new orleans, even *ucking iran, and cuba, offered relief to your country, how pathetic, and in most cases you took it, i dont think there will be ever a day in the UK, when we will need foreign aid, to cope with a natural disaster, which is why your country is a 3rd world nation.

99% of the time the internal democratic decisions of a nation are it's own business and no one elses's. But Skywalker is right, the USA is the only Superpower, and so who occupys the white house is of concern to the whole world.

The UK voters allowed Tony Blair to return as premier for a second term, but they were voting for a political party to govern the country and the leader of the party (even when he is prime minister) can toppled by internal political revolt and a new leader elected. Margaret Thatcher was ousted as Leader of the Conservative Party and thus toppled as premier by her own party's MP's.

With the Presidency of the USA you vote for an individual rather than a political party( yes I know one is always a republican and one a democrat but it is the indivdual people vote for). "The whole world" shuddered in disbelief when the people of the USA voted that man back into office for a second term.

The world is a much more dangerous place with GW in the White House.

City folk in america were shocked, at the result too, i remember media interviewing people in new york, and they even said, how can people be so dumb to vote this man in again.

Its all down to the country bumpkin states, and the uneducated religous nuts.

Is a government really there for the people though? If you would closely examine any western democracy it would be obvious to the observer that political systems are in place to maintain themselves. The people there are just a means to remain the status quo of a stable system. And stable doesn't refer here to stability for the people but for the system. Sometimes it coincides, sometimes it doesn't.

I think cosby is right, clinton did not see colours of skin, the blacks of america loved him, bush is for the oil business fullstop, that is all his presidency is about oil, he appeals to the religous nuts of america, and the gun nuts, and the oil nuts, that is no way to run a presidency.

Vincent, the American people voted President Bush into office not once, but twice. Doesn't that tell you anything at all about how much we care about YOUR opinions?

Baron hand on heart, tell me honestly here, do you think bush is a intelligent man, or do you think he is the dumbest american president in history, after nixon.

Remember he got in the second time, running adds like if kerry is elected, could sept 11 happen again, and crap on how america is safer under the republicans, yet all these terroist attacks happened under bush, not clinton.

Fear is what got bush re-elected, not commonsense.

You are absolutely right Baron, but remember that Adolph Hitler became leader of Germany after a democratic election!!!

What the President of the USA does affects everyone on the planet, and George Bush is scaring everyone, he should be scaring the american people even more, his policies will bankrupt your nation!!!
$billions wasted in Afghanistan and Iraq and he hasn't finished yet.

Of course voting counts, but running adds based on fears on national security, should not be allowed, john kerry was a silver star hero, the republican adds of the democrats being lilly livered left wingers, frightened of war, were ridiculous, clinton did a hell of a job in yugoslavia.

Political parties should not be taunting there nation, that sept 11 will happen again, if you change your commander and chief.

BUSH IS PULLING SEPT 11 OUT, LIKE A MAGICIAN PULLS A RABBIT, OUT OF HIS HAT, OR VAN HELSING PULLS OUT A CROSS TO KEEP DRACULA AWAY.

SEPT 11 WAS A TRAGEDY, IT IS NOT A RABBIT OR A CROSS!!!

way to avoid the question,i dont think bush comes on sciforums so you can state your opinion (which you were asked for) without fear of him changing policy because of it.
