A British military spokesman in Basra confirmed that "two U.K. military personnel" had been detained early on Monday "in a shooting incident" and that troops had used an armored fighting vehicle "to gain entry" to the police station to release them. He said that more than one vehicle had been in the area and that the police inside the station had refused to obey orders from the Interior Ministry to release the men.

these terrorists, cleverly disguised as arabs started killing cops
    whats next? kill iraqi judges?
i thought the goal was to rebuild a civic society?
    hehe

    whats up with that?

    wooohooo!
    anarchy in iraq!

Fucking brits again. These fuckers are the root cause of every problem in the world.

The official said two unknown gunmen in full Arabic dress began firing on civilians in central Basra, wounding several, including a traffic police officer. There were no fatalities, the official said.

The two gunmen fled the scene but were captured and taken in for questioning, admitting they were British marines carrying out a "special security task," the official said.

They are the real terrorist, they kill some shiaas and then some sunnis and blame it all on insurgents. SHAME!! SHAME!!

    UK soldiers 'storm' Basra prison

Some soldiers were forced to flee after their tanks caught fire

British forces have rescued two UK servicemen who were arrested by Iraqi police in the southern city of Basra.

Official Iraqi sources say British tanks stormed the city's jail in what Basra governor Mohammed al-Waili called a "barbaric act of aggression".

The Ministry of Defence said the release of the men was negotiated.

The arrests sparked unrest in which UK tanks came under attack. Reports claimed two Iraqi civilians were killed and three soldiers injured.

    'Daring rescue'

The two men - thought to be British servicemen working undercover - were accused of opening fire on local police.

MoD officials said the men were being handed over to the British when local militants intervened and attempted to snatch them.

We remain committed to helping the Iraqi government

    Defence Secretary
    John Reid

    What effect will unrest have?

Soldiers forming a cordon around the police station became involved, and a wall was demolished by a British tank as they struggled to "collect" the men, the MoD said.

However, sources in the Iraqi Interior Ministry said six tanks were used to smash down the wall in a daring rescue operation of the two men, who are accused of firing at local police.

Witnesses told the Associated Press around 150 prisoners escaped during the operation but Iraqi officials denied any prisoners had escaped.

    Flaming tanks

Earlier, two British tanks, sent to the police station where the soldiers were being held, were set alight in clashes.

Crowds of angry protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones, injuring three servicemen and several civilians.

TV pictures showed soldiers in combat gear clambering from one of the flaming tanks and making their escape.

British officials would not say if the two men were working undercover

In a statement, Defence Secretary John Reid said the soldiers who fled from the tanks were being treated for minor injuries.

Mr Reid added that he was not certain what had caused the disturbances.

"We remain committed to helping the Iraqi government for as long as they judge that a coalition presence is necessary to provide security," the statement said.

Tensions have been running high in the city since the arrest of a senior figure in the Shia Mehdi Army by UK troops.

But Colonel Tim Collins, the former commander of British troops in Iraq, described the Basra unrest as like a "busy night in Belfast".

Col Collins said it did not represent a breakdown of law and order in Basra, which was still a safer city than Baghdad.
    **********

Yes those brits, we dont bullshit, we get the job done, basra has been the most peaceful place in iraq, and i would take the word of the Ministry of defence, rather than iraqi Shias, who like the sunnis are just as evil, and full of lies,
now if we were talking about american troops here, my thoughts would be dubious on the truth, especially after the italian serviceman was shot at a roadblock a couple of months ago, even though he had informed the americans he was coming through, they shot his car to pieces. then they all denied contact with the italian.

Skywalker there was more brits, killed in friendly fire, in the 1st gulf war, than through any combat in iraq.
The americans famous for this, dropped there bombs on uk soldiers, quickly to avoid being hit by anti-aircraft fire, american pilots are notorious for this in vietnam, and iraq, and yugoslavia, probably the reason they hit the chinese embassy, not the old map crap, up to date satelitte images is what they go by, not old *ucking maps, the brits identify there targets, then drop our bombs, we dont drop them on friendly troops, just so we can avoid anti-aircraft fire. The brits have balls, not bullshit.

Skywalker the brits are notorious, for ending hostage situations quickly, hence the iraq jail issue, and the iran embassy siege in the uk, perfect sucess, unlike the balls up in iran, when america tried to free american hostages in there american embassy in iran.

Skywalker we get the job done, we dont bull shit, most the dumb ass, things done in iraq, is by american soldiers, not british ones, like sticking the us flag over, the saddam hussain statue, that went down well in the muslim world, we looked on in disbelief in the uk at this.

Skywalker your a american, a george bush fan according to you, which sums up your state of mind to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or it could be our governments way, of getting the hell out of iraq, there are massive wars going on in iraq, between sunnis and shias, we do not need to be in the middle of it, and i hope the uk, has learned to stay out of muslim countries, our religons do not mix, nor do our cultures, if you need to fight muslim countries, long range bombings is a better idea, than putting troops on the ground.

    UK soldiers 'freed from militia'

Some soldiers were forced to flee after their tanks caught fire

Two British soldiers freed after tanks broke into a Basra prison were being held by Shia militiamen, the Ministry of Defence said.

The MoD said the men had been found at a nearby house after troops broke into the city's prison to look for them.

An MoD spokesman said: "Two British soldiers were detained and taken to an Iraqi police station. We then started negotiating with the Iraqi authorities for their release.

"We understand that the authorities ordered their release. Unfortunately they weren't released and we became concerned for their safety and as a result a Warrior infantry fighting vehicle broke down the perimeter wall in one place.

We remain committed to helping the Iraqi government

    Defence Secretary John Reid

    What effect will unrest have?

"Our guys went in there and searched it from top to bottom in order to go and recover our two soldiers who had been detained.

"They weren't there unfortunately but we did obtain intelligence that pointed to where they were. We then launched another operation to recover them, from a house in Basra."

Mr al-Waili said more than 10 tanks and helicopters were used in the operation at the jail.
    ***********

It seems the iraqi police, handed the brits over to shia militia, no doubt to parade them tortured, in front of tv cameras, with guns to there heads, telling tony blair to get out of iraq.

The truth is out there if you look for it, if you listen to bullshit and lies, you will never find it.

ok the 2 guys who got arrested were most likely SAS, when they were confronted by police they apparantly shot at them, not civilians, they should've been handed to international forces not local police. the cops then sent them away to a home of some insurent nutcases so the troops most likely knocked down the wall as a diversion because they were actually freed from the house where they would've no doubt been executed.
quite frankly i'm amazed they didn't shoot the bastards trying to set them on fire!!! the iraqis were acting outside the law not tjhe british.

Law? What law? There's no law in Basra or Baghdad or Samarra or anywhere else. Law is what you have in a stable state, and what we have here is Mad Max. The Brits did what they had to do - the Iraqis did what they had to do - it's all just a massive fuckup.

I have to agree, its one big mother of all times fuck up, its time to pack up now, the insurgency will never stop, because bin ladens wants us there, he does not want us to leave, he is making fools of us.

its time to take the troops back to disneyland, and madame tussauds, and dust them off when we need them again,
until then by presedential decree its time to stand down on mission cluster fuck.

Considering militia make up 75% of iraqi security forces, what did you expect to here from him country bumpkin, the alternative to ignore the situation, would be to let the uk soldiers, be beaten and dragged infront of tv cameras by militia, to spout some gunpoint script, about how nasty the west is. Besides which it is the iranians, are behind all this, they are in a nuclear stand of with the nazis, france, and the uk, so they are slapping the brits here, by telling there shiaa friends in basra to start riots there.

Let me repeat for you, country bumpkin, iraqi officials who are 75% infitrated by militia, said what a pack of lies.

Let me tell you something, about britain, you seem to know nothing, about what we say is the truth, when you tell lies in the uk, you are shown the door, in government jobs, unlike America were clinton, lied about his affair with monica, infront of a worldwide audience, and still kept his job as president, in britain he would have been, out of job in a week.

They were not Marines they were SAS the SAS is part of the ARMY. There are also two sides to every story, you can either believe from some "unknown" local Basra official that two members of the most professional disciplined special forces unit on the planet started shooting unarmed civilians for no apparant reason OR you can wait until all the facts are known and the truth comes out.
