Odin'Izm, that was a far better responce than I was expecting. I commend you for remaining civil. Damned decent of you. Let's get down to a decent, but somewhat long winded, debate. To be completely honest with you, that is one of the first time I've ever had to say that. In fact, I was caught completely by surprise by your post as I've never had to defend this past-time before. New experience. If this is the case, I can understand slightly better why you would not be as drawn into the Warhammer universe as it does contain similar conventions as the bog standard space operas. However, I must put forward the point that I believe that this particular one has the scope and potential to be a lot deeper than others of it's ilk. I would like to argue this point. I would not say it was badly written, it's just not written to the same standard as some of the Science Fiction greats you mentioned. As I said in my previous post, I read the books for the story and the background information. I find it fascinating that in this universe humanity is not how we would like to see ourselves in the future. Also, I would like to add that I do read what you would consider "decent fiction" alongside these. But I suppose I just have a deeper appreciation for the Warhammer stories than you would. A bit like how a detective would appreciate a good crime novel because he understands the workings behind it Agreed. But with eBay and a resourceful mind you can create wanders from trash Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Given the choice of having the youth of today sit around and watch TV and play video games or doing something creative such as Warhammer (not saying that it's TV or Warhammer, I'm saying it can be one example)...I would rather have them play Warhammer. And I am someone who enjoys video games and the odd TV show so there's no bias there. With Warhammer you create something to how you want it, you then make it look how like how you want it then you field them in battle where superior tactics win and you socialise with others with various in-store activities or game nights at a local club. It's also a good excuse to get a few beers and pizzas in Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! This I can agree on. I could never see myself painting a picture on a blank canvas...not without resorting to stick people anyway. However, there is quite a bit of skill required to painting these things. This is apparent when you look at someone who has just started and compare what they have done to what someone who has been playing for 20+ years has done. These people are usually scandinavian, so we can hate them for that. I used to spend an absurd amount on it. I had more money than I was used to and just blew it on this. Kept me occupied, little projects here and there. But I say, if you have the means to do it, then do it. But this is not a constant thing. Sure I've been playing it for about 15years, but that doesn't mean I've been spending money on it non-stop for 15years. No-one could. Hell, there was a period of 3 years where I didn't even know where my paints were. Now that is a shame. I'm beginning to see where you are coming from. See, where I am the local Games Workshop attracts people from all ages and walks of life. We have people aged between 7 all the way to 50+ (it's rude to ask, so we just assume). And as I live near Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy, we get a lot of military types in as well. We even get foreign sailors who ever collect or are interested by this "bizarre" store. Never a dull moment. That's flattering n' all but lets stop the talk about my giblets please.
There isnt much to discuss unfortunately, I understand your reasons for you liking it, and you understand mine for not. I'll just say that what caused my dislike for warhammer was probably my local shop. That and a warhammer map I once saw ( I think it was 40k) which decripted my homeland (russia) as "Barbaric lands". My main reaosn probably stil lremains, the expense of the hobby and the time it consumes. I just dont have the free time to spend on it. And I was only joking about being gay, so dont worry yourself. That's good, cos my left testicle gets a little shy. So we're agreeing to disagree, I like it. Although I am agreeing on you about price, it's stupidly high. And it's not even taxed in the UK. It's one of two things that isn't taxed here yet you have to sell a spleen just to get a new commander. Hope to see you around
This is ridiculous. I thought this was a forum for intelligent people, but obviously anyone who puts merit on penis size and uses "homosexual" as an insult cannot be very intelligent. Anyways, I play Warhammer 40k, in a league every Monday. I play Tau mostly, and I just got an Eldar army but I don't know if I like them or not... All that moving and hand-to-hand, it confuses me!
Eldar aren't that flexible an army. Conversion ideas are limited...very limited. Plus they think they're better than us mon-keigh. Bastards.
I really enjoy the Tau's strategic choices. There's the "fish of fury," which pisses everyone off: You fill a Devilfish with 12 Firewarriors, fly it right in front of a large group of easily murdered soldiers (see:IG), land the transport in front of them and disembark behind it, double-tap 24 shots into them! If they don't all die, they can't assault you since you can't assault through vehicles. Though, they can still shoot you. And of course, there's the railguns. I don't know if I could play without at least 3 in my army. I hear with the new Tau codex, the railgun will do a flamer template of damage behind the unit you shot at, which only makes sense because a railgun would definitely puncture whatever you were shooting and go through it. Also in the new codex, Tau Broadsides will be able to get the "Targetting Array" upgrade, which gives them a BS of 4 instead of 3.
Yeah, I like the Deciever's special. Well one of them. It allows me to reposition my entire army Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
ah your all on about the 40k but think good old warhammer nothing better than seeing a horde of skaven fall dead to a good old cross bow volley. I think theres problems not with warhammer but with soceity that causes not everyone to be advid fans of games workshop, if governments really wanted to cut crime rates they'd pour money into getting youngsters off tv and computer games and on to the gaming tables of warhammer.
I love the idea of having human militias as part of a Tau army. GW hasn't really explored that indepth enough. I've always wanted to have a 40k vs FB battle. Have the Imperial Guard take on the hordes of Lizardmen. Might be interesting to see what you'd have to roll to get an arrow to penetrate flak armour Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I can see it now, Empire bowmen shooting at a Leman Russ. Roll a 1+ and you'd get "Crew somewhat confused".
Thats something you have to credit the imperial guard with : they have some awesome tanks. Can't wait for the 40K conversion for BF2.
The 40k mod for UT2k4 was released recently. Has some good concepts in it i.e. Whirlwind must be stationary to fire, as must devastators. Only downside to it is that it's very bright. Reminds me of the bright paint trend of the early 90's.
I will do soon enough, most of my men are in the prototype stages and I should have half a squad to show off within the week.
