Actually, the best any man ever did against an Honored Matre was became her equal. They ended up enslaved to each other.

Frank Herbert really got into the pornographic part of sci-fi in his later years, didn't he?

Jedi were arrogant, corrupt, stupid, ignorant, and overconfident.
They die, easily, against nearly any opponent, except redshirts.

Hapsburg, you've obviously only seen the worst times for the Jedi, like during the Mandalorian War and shortly after (KOTOR/KOTOR2) and the Clone Wars. Many Jedi were fiercely loyal to the Code and the Republic, and were not the arrogant self important SOBs portrayed at these times.

That may be, but Thrawn is no ordinary man. Also, could someone satisfy my curiosity by telling me just how these Matres enslave others? I must find a loophole...

The Honoured Matres overwhelm their victims with a continous amplified orgasm. The pleasure would be so intense that they become hopelessly addicted. A sort of sexual mind-control.

So was an honoured Matre's addict truly a victim - or a very, very, fortunate beneficiary?!

Sounds like Larry Niven's idea of "wireheading," in which dissipated future urbanites spend every spare moment stimulating their limbic pleasure centres electronically.

Well, since there is a chemical part to emotion, I'd think there was something of a physical dependence on the sex, not just an incredibly powerful psychological one.

I think Frank Herbert made it pretty clear that the Honored Matres tapped into a part of male biology that was subhuman. It broke a man by feeding the animal in him; a part of which he had no control. Thrawn could in no way will away his slavedom to sex: the most powerful man in the known universe was only an equal to an HM.

If I remember correctly, the Bene Gesserit knew of this sort of sexual dominance for a long time, but never used it. It turned a man into an animal, which was against what the Bene Gesserit believed. They wanted men, not animals. Remember the Gom Jabbar.

Has anyone noticed that 50% of the candidates (Spaceballs, Farscape and Stargate) have about 12% of the votes, but no-ones endorsing them ??? Why are they even in the poll ???

Hey can anyone tell me how to create a poll thread? I'm thinking of making a Wars/Trek/Dune/Babylon thread.

Because they voted on 'coolness' not on the difference between a Wookie's cock and a Klingon's.

Actually, I have a solution to the Matres as well than. There are a great many alien races in Star Wars that had extremeley different physiological and psychological characteristics than humans. Some were even asexual. They could be the key in wyping out the Matres. Anyway, what is the range of these effects?

I believe that in the Wars universe, there were a majority of humans. I don't think the Matres could ever train alien Matres, but Arquibus has a point. The Matres have a weakness to non-humans.

Why hasnt anyone mentioned Stargate? they have some pretty badass aliens (not goa'uld, they're horrible bad guys, lets face it). how about the replicators? the only way they ever got beaten was with an armeggedon device. They'd just gobble up the death star and turn it on the imperials.
plus the wraith could do some damage, especialy with their numbers
and more than anything, these new orai (spelling?), they're all powerful and willing to interfere (i dont think the force would stand up, considering they'd prolly be pure force in the star wars universe)
and, being a trek fan, i have to make a little plug for 8472...6 of their ships equaled the death star's power

There are some pretty freakish aliens in Star Wars too. I don't know much about Stargate, even less than I do about Trek, so you will have to elaborate for me to counter it. Also, just remember that the Death Star was not the most powerful superweapon in the arsenal.

In the SW movies, it seemed to me that humans pretty much controlled everything. Why bother worrying about dominating alien species when you've got Darth Vader on a leash?

Umm, well, sex was involved, so I'd have to say it's a pretty intimate range. To get the effects started, anyway. Afterwards, the guys became subservient drones.

Humans didn't control everything. It merely seemed that way because the movies focused around the Empire and its creation. The most powerful man at the time, Palpatine, was racist and didn't allow aliens to hold much power in the Empire (Thrawn excluded) but I'd like to see the Matres reaction to the Vong. Oh, and an orbital bombardment could pretty well wipe them out, couldn't it?

An orbital bombardement could pretty much wipe anyone out.
