    ...song? It has to have words to it.
    Personally, I love "Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland", but "Die Wacht am Rhein" is excellent.
    Oh, one rule for this thread: it has to be post-napoleonic time.

    Was J.S. Bach 1800s? If so its one of his songs, can't remeber the name. I think it is absolutely mystifying.

    BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC

    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
    His truth is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

    I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
    His day is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

    I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
    “As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
    Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
    Since God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

    He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
    He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
    Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
    [originally …let us die to make men free]
    While God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

    He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
    He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
    So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    Red River Valley
    http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&star...antedForest/Cottage/3192/Redriver.html&e=9717

    From this valley they say you are going
    We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
    For they say you are taking the sunshine
    That has brightened our path for a while

    Come and sit by my side if you love me
    Do not hasten to bid me adieu
    But remember the Red River Valley
    And the cowboy who loved you so true

    Won't you think of the valley you're leaving
    Oh how lonely, how sad it will be?
    Oh think of the fond heart you're breaking
    And the grief you are causing to me

    As you go to your home by the ocean
    May you never forget those sweet hours
    That we spent in the Red River Valley
    And the love we exchanged mid the flowers

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterlands, 1825:

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    Ist's Preußenland? Ist's Schwabenland?
    Ist's wo am Rhein die Rebe blüht?
    Ist's wo am Belt die Möwe zieht?
    O nein, nein, nein!
    I: Sein Vaterland muß größer sein! :I

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    Ist's Bayerland? Ist's Steierland?
    Ist's, wo des Marsen Rind sich streckt?
    Ist's, wo der Märker Eisen reckt?
    O nein, nein, nein!
    I: Sein Vaterland muß größer sein! :I

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    Ist's Pommerland? Westfalenland?
    Ist's, wo der Sand der Dünen weht?
    Ist's, wo die Donau brausend geht?
    O nein, nein, nein!
    I: Sein Vaterland muß größer sein! :I

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    So nenne mir das große Land!
    Ist's Land der Schweizer? Ist's Tirol?
    Das Land und Volk gefiel mir wohl.
    O nein, nein, nein!
    I: Sein Vaterland muß größer sein! :I

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    So nenne mir das große Land!
    Gewiß, es ist das Österreich,
    An Ehren und an Siegen reich?
    O nein, nein, nein!
    I: Sein Vaterland muß größer sein! :I

    Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?
    So nenne endlich mir das Land!
    So weit die deutsche Zunge klingt
    und Gott im Himmel Lieder singt:
    Das soll es sein! Das soll es sein!
    I: Das wackrer Deutscher, nenne dein! :I

    Das ganze Deutschland soll es sein!
    O Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein
    und gib uns rechten deutschen Mut,
    daß wir es lieben treu und gut!
    I: Das soll es sein! Das soll es sein!
    Das ganze Deutschland soll es sein! :|

    this thread should be shut down for the boredom factor. Who can even read German anyway?

    Um...a lot of people should know German. If you don't, you're missing out on something majorly kick-ass.

    Actually whenever one comes to an english speaking site they should follow protocol and write in english as well. If they don't write in english it just shows that they lack the intelligence to follow the rules and can't do as expected. The least they should do is put an interpretation of the message so that others who don't speak or know the language could read it.

    ...or you could be intelligent and learn German, the best language.
    Plus, the song is originally in german, and I don't want to take the time to translate it.

    Why learn a language that I don't use? I live in a state that has many spanish speaking people therefore I was intelligent enough to learn spanish to be able to communicate with them. Since few people speak german I really don't see the reason to learn it for again, I'll never be using it where I live.

    Because German is an internationally understood language, much like english and latin, it is one of the major business languages, and is also a major intellectual language.
    And 'few people' my ass! A large population in Europe speaks it, and a big portion of Americans either speak it fluently or know the basics.
    It's a major language, and the best language.

    I don't know about best, but its up there. Besides, without German we wouldn't have English. Anyway, it is disrespectful to write a piece of literary work in another language without permission from the author.

    ...Yeah....it's not *the* best, but it is an important language.
    And...the song was originally in German, and the words won't rhyme if they're in English, major thing in a folksong.

    I speak German fluently, a result of having minored in German as an undergraduate and then having done two years of graduate work in Wurzburg. Nevertheless, I would never be so stupid/arrogant as to suggest that it is "the best" language.

    In terms of being a "major" language, it is outpaced by many. For Americans, learning Spanish reaps major economic benefits, benefits that German just doesn't hold. Not only that, but the number of German speakers around the world is declining ---- not even close to being the case for Spanish!

    I found the reference in the song to "Schwabenland" to be ironic in the context of your argument, Hapsburg, given that many Germans feel that Swabians don't even speak German. I, myself, have a hard time understanding that funny Swabish accent!

    Bavarians and Swabians are damn hard to understand, just as those from east Germany... Whatever, I think it is all right to post a german song in its original language, just as I would do it with an english, latin or french song, perhaps I would make some exceptions for songs from languages with another sign system.

    Here's one I like...

    The Fighting Sixty Ninth

    About the 69th New York Regiment which fought in the American Civil War

    Come all you gallant heroes,
    Along with me combined
    I'll sing you a song,
    it won't take long,
    Of the Fighting Sixty Ninth
    They're a band of men brave,
    stout and bold,
    From Ireland they came
    And they had a leader to the fold,
    Mick Cocoran was his name

    It was in the month of April,
    When the boys they sailed away
    And they made a sight so glorious,
    As they marched along Broadway
    They marched along Broadway,
    me boys,
    Until they reached the shore
    And from there they went to Washington,
    And straight unto the war

    Chorus:
    So we gave them a hearty cheer,
    me boys,
    It was greeted with a smile
    Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise,
    We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth

    And when the war is said and done,
    May heaven spare our lives
    For its only then we can return,
    To our loved ones and our wives
    We'll take them in our arms,
    me boys,
    For a long night and a day
    And we'll hope that war will come no more,
    To sweet America

    So we gave them a hearty cheer,
    me boys,
    It was greeted with a smile
    Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise,
    We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth

    So farewell unto you dear New York,
    Will I e'er see you once more
    For it fills my heart with sorrow,
    To leave your sylvan shore
    But the country now it is calling us,
    And we must hasten fore
    So here's to the stars and stripes, me boys,
    And to Ireland's lovely shore

    And here's to Murphy and Devine,
    Our leaders of renown
    Who did escort our heroes,
    Unto the battle ground
    And said unto our colonel,
    We must fight them hand to hand
    Until we plant the stars and stripes,
    Way down in Dixieland

    So we gave them a hearty cheer,
    me boys,
    It was greeted with a smile
    Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise,
    We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth

    [Repeat Chorus]

    That's odd. Isn't Swabia now part of Bayern?
    Oh, and hey, I didn't want something to be lost in the translation, so I posted the song in it's original lyrics. I got it from this site:

    "The Star Spangled Banner" (Sep. 1814)
    (aka "The Anacreontic Song", 1779)
    Words by Frances Scott Key, 1780-1843
    Music by John Stafford Smith, 1750-1836
    Arranged by Thomas Carr, 1814

    O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
    What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
    Whose broad stripes and bright stars thro' the perilous fight,
    O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
    And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
    Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

    CHORUS [repeated two times in the original version]
    Oh say, does that star spangled banner yet wave,
    O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

    2.
    On the shore dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep,
    Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
    What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep
    As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
    Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
    In full glory reflected now shines in the stream.

    (CHORUS)

    3.
    And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
    That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
    A home and a country shall leave us no more?
    Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
    No refuge could save the hirelings and slave
    From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.

    (CHORUS)

    4.
    O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
    Between their lov'd home, and the war's desolation;
    Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land,
    Praise the Power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation.
    Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
    And this be our motto, "In God is our trust."

    OP says it has to be post-Napoleonic era. Napoleonic era didn't end 'till 1815.
    Though that is a good song, tho.
