    Coffee,

    It's simple really.
Xev created this thread for a purpose.
That purpose was to ridicule me for talking about two things:
1.) Bach. (More specifically, the Art of the Fugue.)
    2.) Godel, Escher, Bach.

Apparently, Xev doesn't believe that people should talk about things. People should only read quietly to themselves and never ever discuss the books they're reading as that can only mean that they're trying to get into some random e-chick's panties. Same with music. People should only listen to music without ever sharing their feelings on the music with others. Because she knows all too well that the only purpose of discussion is to get into e-panties.

Which is funny considering how often you can find Xev rambling on about Emperor or Dimmu Borgir or Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. She must have been desperately trying to get into a lot of e-panties considering all her posts on the subjects.

    Ah. Well.
Bet her hand is tired after all that masturbating.
    I know mine is.

    What page are you on?

Dude, I bought that book and man, it's confusing as hell. I guess it's only 'cause I read it on break from my job. But seriously, who reads that kind of stuff and actually understands sentence after sentence? They are kind of forced to formulate their own postulates. And after postulate after postulate, they are far fucking off. They don't understand anything. You must have been a great student at whatever school you went to. What are you? A moron?

    Apendrapew,

I've made it to chapter 5. At that point, I put the book down and got distracted by other things, but I occasionally pick it up and review what I've read already preparing to pick it up again soon and start once more in earnest.

Yes. There are confusing aspects to it. But if you take it slowly, one step at a time, and don't move on until you've understand what you've read so far, I think it all builds on itself fairly well.

I stopped at chapter 5 because I had some difficulty figuring out what was up with the elusive Diagram G. I even started a thread about it over at TheScienceForum during the hiatus: http://www.thescienceforum.com/Diagram-G-and-Recursive-Transition-Networks-434t.php

I searched around the internet looking for answers and found that all the references I could find on the subject were people going... "Huh? What? Derr..." Funny.
Anyway. It finally came to me. But, there is still a riddle to be solved about the Flip Tree. And the other equations immediately following Diagram G. I scratched and noodled and even tried masturbating, but I'm still stuck on that section.

When I pick up the book again, I'll read all the way through again and if I still can't figure out those equations when I come to them then I'll have to bookmark them and hope that something comes to light later that will help me to understand the significance to which Hofstadter is referring. I'll get them someday. I can pretty much guarantee that. The only question is how long it'll take me.

This is a problem, of course, with Hofstadter's style. He doesn't just tell you the answer. Or even the question, for that matter. He kinda tricks you into things. But, if you don't end up going down the right path, there's no signposts to redirect you and you get hopelessly confused and stuck on some tangent or other.

This book would probably be an easier read in school with someone teaching it that actually understands what is being shown in each instance. Someone with a teacher's edition. But, it would probably suck much of the fun and discovery out of it.

Give and take. Plus and minus. One or the other.
    Damn life.

    Heh. Interesting disparity there.
Yes. I'm a moron. And. No. I didn't really do all that great at school. I never really gave a shit about school.

Anyway. Don't you know that all I'm after is some e-panties?
How about yours? I know you're a dude, but fuck it. Gotta take what I can get.
    Spread 'em.

Yeah, I get the same sentiments. Still, she's smart. You can't fake that kind of smartness. Where the fuck did the wanderer go?

Dude, you are far smarter than I am. Even at the age you are. (does memory fade with age? I wonder to what extent. ) I wonder who the fuck these guys are who make these guys these guys the top of the New York Times. Seriously? Who the fuck are they?

I miss reading the rantings of The Wanderer.

    Apendrapew,
Oh. He's around. He's just pissy is all. Nobody ever appreciates his conducting abilities and so he's decided to withhold himself as a form of punishment. To himself or others, I'm not sure.

    Roman,
As Apendrapew says, she is smart. This is fairly obvious. I won't go so far as to say that it can't be faked, but I will say that I find it unlikely. But, she seems to have issues about it. She hasn't been much more than a troll here for quite some time. Seems she thinks that if she does anything else that she'll just be taken for an e-flirt or something. Dunno. Too bad, really. But, it's her choice in the end. Maybe someday she'll get beyond it.

Maybe she just has the same issues that Wanderer has. Tired of threads and posts that took time and care going to waste. Pearls before swine and all that. Too many people get caught up in the pearls before swine bullshit. It distracts from the real issue which is the advancement of self.

Or... Maybe she's just on the rag.

Yesterday I found out that the Backstreet boys might be making a comeback.

My heart was raised on the wings of hope into the heavens.
Despite the cruelty of the world these artists stand as examples of integrity and depth in an industry of recipe based creativity and rampant sampling.

What did Baudrillard say about our self-referential modern world?

    No really…what did he say?

Not everyone can appreciate the lamentations of a youth seeking a cute girl to call his own or the howls of a lone wolf rapping for his biatch or the crooning appeals of a wanton heart trapped in a post-modern, post-industrial, pre-apocalyptic, generation Y (why?), consumerist western world.
It takes a delicate pallet to savour these transcending tastes.

    Bach?
What was Bach but his eras Michaels Jackson, without the freakishness?
Who was Vivaldi but his century’s Britney Spears, without the plastic breasts and the obvious retardation?

I don't care about his conducting abilities. Some things ring true. A lot of his ideas resonate with me. When he speaks, I listen.

    Apendrapew,

(What the hell does your name mean, anyway?)

I agree with you that Wanderer had interesting things to say. Some good. Some bad. Just like us all. I kinda wish he'd just get over his angst and come back too. But. Just like everything. It's his choice in the end.

By the way, do you think you'd be able to recognize his writing under the guise of another username?

    Satyr,

Dunno. Never read. Be careful though. You'll get accused of name dropping pretty soon.

Actually, no. Bach wasn't famous in his own time. Well, there's disparate accounts on this. Some say that he was and some say that he wasn't. I tend to believe the accounts I've read where he wasn't made popular until a hundred years after his death. Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Mozart (among others) revived Bach and made him known. In his own time he was just a simple man who made poor business decisions.

He was devoted to the Lord, you see. He chose poverty in the service of the Lord rather than fame and riches in the service of the people. If he had wanted to be his era's Michael Jackson or Britney Spears or whatever, he'd have written opera.

Fuck, I'm still waiting for the Spice Girls to make a comeback.

But just because I'm special, and moody, I listen to more sophisticated and sensitive rock, especially of the British sort like Radiohead, Coldplay, and Travis.

But that's not to say I don't enjoy a little Wu-Tang now and then.

    Not really.
The only thing I know about him is that one of his books appears in one of the scenes in The Matrix.

So who is this Baudrillard guy, anyways?
    He sounds like a chef.

    -Bob-
You are so pretentiously oblivious about good music.

The hip-hop genre represents the cultural anxieties of generations of disillusioned young people that are looking for the Self in the bling-bling reality of ghetto existentialism.

Their words echo the social sensibilities of the masses that have been excluded from the capitalistic profit sharing and they carve out a new reality amongst the crack-houses and bitty-bopping rides. Pieces strapped against their hearts and biatches hanging from their arms in Conanesque hyper-masculinity poses, while their hands drifts over their crotches reminding you of the essence of human psychology.

I can almost hear them now:
“Yeiaaaaaa, raise your hand up in the air and shake them like you just don’t care….”
“Put your left hand in and whirl it all about…….”

Street poetry forged in Ebonics splendour crying out for artificiality by embracing the symbols of superficial materialism and hedonistic amorality.

They sample other people’s riffs and imitate their rhythms in a denouncement of creativity itself and sell image in place of substance in true American fashion.

    Satyr, do you hate niggers?

    I'm getting that vibe.

    I'm sensing a connection here.

Image in place of substance? Where have I heard that before?

I think you might be the only normal one. How does it feel not to be 'special'?

Well, what music do you like to listen to?

Hey, I resent that. But I'm sure there are plenty who talk about 'pianists' and then 'masterbate' to it.

    They’s my peops.

The verisimilitude of the encroaching vulgarity compromises the rising dissing

The black man comes as an urban warrior a new-aged Morpheus casting aspersions against the sagacity of whity’s world.
He adopts the garments of the debasing capitalistic materialism, making his crib a museum full of the emblems of disenfranchisement.

The talk about the ho’s they’ve banged and the Benjamin’s they’ve squandered for the white mans symbols of success, thusly soiling the very objects that quarantine them from the sources of power.

    Get it?

    Peace out.

I want to read that Hofstader book, Gödel, Escher, Bach!

I don't have the money to buy it, and the few libraries that have the book in my country are on the other end of the country, and to order them via inter-library transactions, would cost half as much as the book itself.

So. Anyone want to buy it for me, or give me theirs?
