But Einstein had alredy done the theory of Relativty well before WW2. If he died in Aushwitz or somewhere we'd stil have nuclear bombs + energy today.

you mean the first episode, were theRussians rule America? That was because of us losing the korean war I think. The Sino Soviet empire swept the world + America couldnt hold out alone forever.

Horrible idea! but since oldstyle comunist governmnts were so rotten + corupt, could they have carried on without a west to compete against?

  3. over several centuries, 3 groups of Jewish exiles leave Israel, they end up in the Western Hemisphere, found 3 continent-wide empires, destroy themselves & all the evidence each time, but leave this book made of golden foil in Palmyra, New York; alternate history or "Book of Mormon"?

They would have broken up, I reckon, under those circumstances--with no competition, empires wither on the vine. If America had lost the Korean War and been conquered by the Russians, it's possible that the Soviet Empire would have broken up in the late 60's, early 70's instead of 1990.

Do you think Amerique would have let herself go quietly into a crimson night, or turned the world atomic?

good question. If an American govt. had tried to waste the whole planet + fry everyone - including our own people since the commies would obviusly nuke us back - wouldnt that be more wrong than submiting to conquest ?

under Red rule at least the American people would stay alive and perhaps hav some hope of future freedom, as in what Xylene said. even if there was a vorte + our country decided we would "rather die standing than live on our knees...", we cant say we have the righ t to make that choice for the rest of the world too.

One off-the-wall possibility is that the American Revolution could have been influenced more by Puritan radicalism and the Levellers than by common sense; America could have ended up like France, a half-socialist and half capitalist soi-disant Republic.

In some versions of history America could have become a communist state under Leveller and Digger influence, and allied with France, could have invaded Europe to spread the ideals of equality and fraternity as opposed to liberty.

I read an interesting time travel novel set in a future where the decendents of an earth devastated by a nuclear war which broke out during the Cuban Missle Crisis send back a group of time travelors to prevent the war. They manage to do so, but a few years later another nuclear war breaks out following the assasination of a multitude of US government officials. Again they use their machine and manage to prevent the war by preventing most of the assasinations (a few got thru, JFK's brother for one). They find themselves going back in time again and again and ultimately are faced with the prospect of a time machine just about out of gas that can not be repaired with current technology. They make one final trip and this time convince the czar of Russia to colonize the West coast (something that apparently was considered) so that the conditions that led to the cold (and ultimately hot) war would never exist. It's an interesting take on the subject and seems to suggest that the tide of history is not easily turned and, despite your best efforts, will keep coming at you like death in the movie "Final Destination".

There were plans for the Czar of Russia to colonise Alaska with Cossacks, and send them out as colonisers/conquerers over Canada and the northwestern USA. Part of the reason for the purchase of Alaska was to prevent this possibility. If it had occurred as the Csar had wished, it would have been interesting :bugeye: to see what the 1920-90's would have been like in that alternative America with Soviet power (possibly) extended to a large part of the Western Hemisphere.

Czars couldnt have overrun north America - except some parts of Canada maybe, + that wouldv started another war with Britain at the time. If russians had settled in our continent, their province would probably have broken away after Red October - theyd have our good old US next door which could offer them far beter than all the craziness of the Russian revolution.

Good point, Jenny; it would have made the Cold War exta-interesting to have the Soviets on one side of the Bering Strait, their former friends in Canada, and the USA and Canada trying to keep an eye on both.

There was a book published in the 1920s, If it had happened otherwise, with a great many speculatiions. One of the shortest- and most entertaining- was james Thurber's If Grant had been drunk at Appotomax...I leave you to imagine it.

The ultimate time travel paradox is probably Heinlien's All You Zombies.

I'm trying to remember a short story... or maybe it was a series of stories where it was an alternate universe where this one general didn't die... so one battle wasn't lost... and Rome DIDN'T fall. Anyone remember that?

There was another novel with Mohamed becomin a christian monk instead of starting Islam.. without the Arabs being united, Persia + Byzantum never fell. most of the Med was stil ruled from Constatinopl in the 14th century, the Normans had never invaded England, and there was an extra holiday named for 'Saint Mouamet'...

  19. they came all the way to California, see below
not sure, the timeline is wrong, see below:
actually the ruskies didn't even have to be that close, an interesting "what if" is; what would have happened if during the 'Great Depression', people radicalized & overthrough the gov & capitalism?

I've heard that Roosevelt saved capitalism, by using a few socialist tricks, like social security, WPA, CCC, arts & theatre projects, etc...
