Yes, I'm dealing with a new pet again. But, but, but! It's not my pet this time!

What do turtles eat? These are very small, baby size, with red-orange stripe from eye down the neck. The bottom is yellow with green spots. Please at least help identify the turtle type!

It turns out it's illegal to buy and keep turtles, so we can't ask at a pet store. These were sold by the Chinese people on the street, $5 each. For food, I guess, but my friend intends to keep it as a pet.

All input appreciated. Hurry up, they look like death will soon ceise them. It seems my friend tried to feed them but they're not eating anything.

And since turtles are cold blooded, ther metabolism is slower than ours. So the urgency might not be so urgent as you think.

And maybe it is better if they die now. Do you really want to take care of a turtle who might outlive you?

The logic of that escapes the reasonable mind. He/she already said yes.

I used to feed my turtle lettuce. note: DO NOT feed them head and iceberg lettuce, spinach, or avacado. Broccoli and cauliflower in very small amounts or better yet, not at all. I used to break up the lettuce for them a bit.

    Turtle food. (click the picture)

Ours is quite happy with it. An occasional insect, piece of fish, lettuce, or apple is nice too.

It's important to find out what kind of turtle it is so that you can give it a proper habitat. Our was doing poorly until we figured out that it wasn't what the pet-store said it was and made its tank much warmer.

This forum might be able to help with identification. Post a photo.

I think it's only illegal to buy real young turtles before they're fully developed. When my sister got hers from a boyfriend, they said it was illegal. At the time it was only like two inches in diameter. They need a lot of heat to grow and I guess most people don't have the proper living conditions to make them grow to a decent size. But yeah, as for turtles in general, it's not illegal to have them so I'm curious where ya live too. You should be able to pick up turtle pellets at any pet shop as many sell turtles too.

In NY. I know, it sounds very weird. My friend said that, she knows more than me about pet-keeping. I was surprised. Perhaps it's some technicality that has to do with their age.

    What do Baby Turtles eat...

Baby Turtles can be feed with small meal worms. Also larvae, crickets can be fed. Just the quantity of feed should be upto the limit.

    IMPORTANT!

Make sure your turtle has a place to dry out. Check for shell rot right away. It is very common in turtles kept by Chinese.

Oh, so shell-rot is in Chinese turtles is not relevant to you?.... you disgust me. Ok, you don't disgust me. But someone found sciforums through this thread, and signed up just to post a response telling me something is still relevant and the thread is getting hits from somewhere.

So remember folks - before buying your turtle check for shell-rot, especially if you are buying them from a tank without a dry area. And especially if the merchant is Chinese (because sick turtles still fry well)

No when I finally buy my turtles I will buy Murray long necks. native Australian turtles breed specifically for pets, and sold under Australian animal welfare laws
