I know that there are a lot of propheceys and other things from people of our time and from the myans ect that say the earth will end in fire. Now Lets put the future telling stuff aside and say is it possible for a world wide destruction to happen? Like all the volcanoes erupting, storms, ect. What would cause such a thing to happen?

Well I have recently been thinking about how to enhance methods of being able to tell when an Earthquake is due.

I had recently been watching something about a lost city, that had been lost to Liquidfaction during an earthquake (when the moisture in the ground is forced to the top, causing everything to be flooded in water and mud)

I realised that when an earthquake occurs there must be certain "Pressure" changes in the atmosphere, the density of gases must be at an all time high on a fault line.

Although an Earthquake can occur to heated mantles, I believe that atmospheric pressure causes the mantles to falter by pressurising them to the heated magma.

If my assumption is correct, then specific seasonal changes could cause earthquakes just like they cause Tornados. This could be or relevance to locations built upon fault lines.

EARTH will end in fire, because some billions of ears in future the Sun will become a red giant and burn down earth in couple of seconds.

Of course there is a theory tht we will be so smart by tht time tht could change earths orbit in a much further distance from sun.

also consider big metiorite hitting the earth.

If it destroys our moon then we will have enourmous cunami's, greatest volcano activity since birth of earth, earths orbit would change because of the lack of moons gravitational force. We will eithe fry or freeze. ~10% tht we will maybe stay in current temperature limits.

    Interesting question Tristan.

Earth in her current position in the cosmos is fairly geologically stable, I guess. Something pretty drastic would have to occur if our planet were to be overcome in flames.

I guess Avatar is right... something would have to intervene into our relatively quiet cosmic existence in order to stoke up the fires. That's why so many geologists scrutinised the K2 boundary so much... not only was there evidence for a large asteroid... but also plenty of volcanic activity as a result.

Stryder, THAT is an interesting concept. A slight pressure change over a large region might represent a significant force capable of destabilizing a balanced system.

Avatar, saw a program on super volcanoes that implied one really large volcano could devastate a continent. Seems the conditions for such a super volcano exist in present day America.

  9. The Earth will end in fire when we go over the top in trying to reduce global warming by drastically reducing the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere therfore increasing the proportion of oxygen in the atmosphere allowing everything to oxidise in a global fireball.

Carbon dioxide, methane and other rare gases only make up 0.1% of the Earth's atmosphere so the above is not a likely scenario.

What about "normal" weather systems? A tropical cyclone can have a low pressure system associated with it extending over vast distances same as with high pressure systems.

  12. I propose to change the composition of the atmosphere by planting the whole landmass of the earth with trees, felling them, replanting etc.etc.etc and blasting all the wood off the planet in giant rockets. Also to fertilise the oceans to grow photosynthetic plankton harvest this and compress it, blasting this off to space. The increase in photosynthesis and getting rid of the carbon produced should raise the oxygen content sufficiently in a matter of a few centuries to end the Earth in fire.

Anyone here take chemistry or geology? Didn't think so.

The Earth has been gradually cooling since it's creation. The internal heat at pressent is caused by the continual radioactive decay of various elements. This heat is released through volcanoes, spreading ridges, gysers, etc. For the earth to end in fire of its own accord this way wold require it to heat up, and it won't happen.

There is not enough force from increased air pressure to cause earthquakes.
The continual movement of the earths crust causes them. They are unpredictable. A few feet of rock and dirt can quicly exceed air pressue. See how well you can breath while buried.

The wourld will end in flames whn we nuke it.
