Can anyone please give me 5 scientific inaccuracies in Day After Tomorrow?

    I really really need these for a research essay in a Natural Disasters class. We need to know 10 but I already have 5. Any help woul dbe great but I need backup for the facts. Thanks.

    So Far I have the following:
    (some of these I only have because the prof told us)
    1. The cold temperatures would not have raised sea level, but instead lower them because glacier size woul dhave been drastically increasing, thus sucking water out of the oceans.
    2. The water from a tsunami would usually disperse within 1/2 and hour to 1 hour, and would not have remained for hours or days like it did in NYC.
    3. People cannot outrun tsunamis, especially considering how close the people in the movie were to the wave and how far they had to run to escape it.
    4. The buildings in the movie could not have withstood the force of that wave, especially the statue of liberty. It would have buckled in the middle.
    5. The water from the flooding freezes far too quickly in NYC. Before the "big freeze" happens, all this water is already frozen, meaning that in aa day or so this mass of water, however thick, has already frozen. This would take far longer and required colder temperatures.

    .Remember, I need 5 more...backed up with legit science. Anythign about the formation of the "cold-air vacuum" would be great, or anythign denouncing the tornadoes in L.A.

    jtuds, I suggest you do take a look at the linked thread which cardio provided ... it does include several other scientific inaccuracies, which you haven't mentioned yet, that I and several other people have discussed about.

    I have more detailed info about some of the points made in that thread if you want to know about it. In fact, I had an interesting discussion about this topic with Hypercane this past summer (who started that thread).

    Yeah I really can't find anything I need on that former thread. Theres like 1 or 2 things, but I can't find anything to back up the claim that a low pressure system would only suck air up and not pull it down. Even in a hurricane, while air is sucked upwards in the eye walls, it actually is pulled downwards in the middle of the eye. ANYWYAS, I STILL DO NEED HELP WITH THIS, AND I SEE THAT PPL HAVE VIEWED IT AND NOT RESPONDED, WELL LETS START RESPONDING PEOPLE!!!

    - The sheer size of the superstorm requires a tremendous amount of latent heat to maintain it's form ... which is not found over the land in which it formed ... especially over the arctic regions.
    - The flow of air towards the surface at the eye of the storm contradicts what is known about low pressure systems. The storm is not a hurricane, it has the characteristics but it is not a hurricane by definition ... it is a massive low pressure system and air flows up, not down, in low pressure systems.
    - The storm surge seen flooding NY couldn't have been caused by the superstorm itself since the position of the storm at the time of the surge wouldn't create a surge of even half its size to even occur. The wind patterns were blowing out towards the ocean ... not inland as the movie had dictated.
    - The tropopause is only -80 F in temperature, on average. This contradicts the -150F temperature drop at the eye as it follows its course. The only way it could reach those temperatures is if the air up in the mesosphere is sucked down ... but again it contradicts what is known about low pressure systems
    - Conditions for the formation of a superstorm were not present in the north as the air masses in the north is generally cold and calm with ground water temperatures hovering near the freezing point (no latent heat).
    - A storm of such magnitude would require a massive amount of moisture in the air ... which may be supplied by the oceans though the air over land does not have that luxary of an "infinite" supply of moisture. The oceans have a consistant supply of moisture in the air but since the storm is over land ... there is fluctuating moisture levels throughout the continent and it's in short supply.

    Which in fact was surprisingly fun and challenging. Taking on a scientific aspect on the superstorm.

    Ok what if there was a steady stream like a jet stream feeding the storm say a jet stream swoped down into the gulf and drawed up moisture from there and then on the east coast a inbound front not to mention if the lake effect snow kicked in around the great lakes. Not sure if any of this could ever happen all at the same time but it would be pretty close to the snow fall seen without the tidal waves and such I think correct me if I am wrong.

    By the way there is a new movie out at blockbuster about a comet hitting the earth causing a ice age LMAO. I'll get the name of it I think its called point of impact but I am not sure.

    Thanks for all the help everyone, the exam is tomorrow at 12:30. I was able to pass your infoalong to alot of classmates. I just hope we can all rememebr 10 points, along with all the other material. By the way, I enjoy reading these posts, you guys are very knowledgeable.

    The thing about this is that the jet stream or any other wind pattern is affected by the coriolis force. If you had a steady stream feeding the storm, that would mean that the winds are generally flowing north ... all the way up from the Gulf carrying the moisture beyond the arctic circle.

    As you know, the coriolis force increases with latitude so as the circulation of wind moves further northward, the more influential the coriolis force will be and the more to the right the winds will turn (in the Northern hemisphere).

    So, the warm mosit air needed to supply the storm couldn't take a direct line from the gulf up towards the pole without turning towards an westerly direction.

    But it may be possible, since there is friction on the ground causing resistance to the coriolis force, the mosit air from the gulf could flow all the way up to the north and fuel the storms.

    It really depends how much the atmospheric patterns change during the creation of the storms. On any given day, the jet stream doesn't behave in this manner ... it usually flows in a west-east direction with the occasional trough and ridge.

    I havent seen the movie, but one of my profs mentioned this. There were wolves apparently coming into the city or something, and those kinds of wolves are only found in the Boreal forests farther north...so they would not or could not have travelled that far.

    And the way that they were depicting air being drawn into the hurricane was completely opposite to reality. I think the movie showed air being drawn in from the top, when in reality it is drawn from the bottom.
