I think there is (or was) a US gov't project on building laser-defenses, but most scientists agree that they are, if not impossible to implement, not useful.

There is a US project undergoing development at the moment. It's in the Proof of Concept stage at the moment and will target any incoming missiles with short laser bursts. From what I have heard it fires a weak laser which screws up the missiles guidance and sends it off course. It's not at the stage as it is in Generals where it actually destroys the missile.

The Russians are developing a method that physically takes out a missile. It fires what can only be described as a shotgun burst towards an incoming missile destroying it before impact. This is very hit and miss but is proving effective.

The US is developing and very close to production lasers for anti-missile/mortar/artillery, these systems can fit on larger planes and modified APC and trucks at present, and are chemical fluoride deuterium lasers. Further work is being done on solid-state laser with a production goal of a 100Kw lasers (at present 25Kw prototypes are in testing) that could be placed on trucks, tanks, humvees, helicopters and fighter jets. Read the links above for more information.
