THere may have been a thread about this already, if so, delete this one.

I think most of us can say that we download a lot of stuff for free that we probably would have paid for 20 years ago. I would like to have an idea of how much of your music, movies and software is downloaded, what you think about downloading those things and why you download it.

    I'll start:

I have installed a pirated version of Windows XP Pro on all of my computers (including my sis's comp and my parents' comps). I buy 0% of OSs

I buy the occasional video game that I know I will play online because downlading games and gettign them to work online is a pain in the butt.

If I want to try out a game before I buy it to play online, I download it.

ANy word processing programs or graphics making programs, I download mostly because they cost a fortune. I buy 0% of my processing programs.

If I want to get a game that I will not be playing online (like the Sims for example), I will just download it. I buy about 20% of games and software

I buy the CDs from my favourite bands that I want to support and I download the rest.I buy about 5% of my music.

If I want to own a movie that has already released on DVD but isn't the greatest movie ever, I wil download it DVD quality or rip a friend's copy. I will get some DVDs if I think it needs to be perfect quality.I buy about 33% of my movies.

I would buy everything legally if I could afford it, but I am a broke part-time working student who needs to pay for school and save for when I move out in less than a year.

So... what are your downloading habits?

All of my computers have a Cracked copy of XP.
For games, I very rarely download them. I'd much rather buy and own the box with CDs and the manual for three reasons:

    1) the boxart is nice -somtimes-
    2) if the internet asplodes, or i cant afford it, I can alwase play a 1-man match of Battlefield.
    3) I can be assured that the majority of the time my CD key is not in use

There are a lot of free open source Word processor programs to use (i use openoffice). And for Graphics programs, no way im spending $600 for a copy of photoshop (or illustrator, or dreamweaver, or flash for that matter) so those are alwase downloaded or borrowed from a friend.

Music is something I alwase download. I used to buy CDs, but every single music CD I own olnly has at most 3 good songs on it, so I rarely buy them anymore except for soundtracks.

No need to pirate windows when you can use linux/*nix or *BSD.

Games are another thing. Most of the best games work better on windows than linux, though that is changing. Problems arise with pirated copies and playing online though.
Open Office is free, and can do what MS Office can (with less security holes, and no Clippy!). For images you can use The Gimp.

The rest is pretty much the same for me.

I think that it is illegal and unethical to download software or music, so I do not do it.

Don't sit here and give me justifications either, I've heard all of them before and still think it is very unethical to download software and music.

Do you think it is ethical to buy CDs, which supports the RIAA and major record labels?

I use linux so that's free

I think I've bought (willingly or not) every version of windows I've used, although I currently only have cracked copies (hardly ever used). I've paid Microsoft enough already to not feel any shame in pirating their software.

I do pirate TV shows that I watch only because they don't reach local stations untill years later (if they reach them at all). But I also buy the shows I like on DVD.

I pirate music, mostly because I can't get half the music I like in local stores but also because CDs have become rediculously expensive. I show no remorse though since I have a collection of "legal" CDs that numbers close to 300, so I've more than paid my due to the record companies.

Sometimes I download movies, but I never download movies I plan on seeing in the theatre.

Well heres something ethical for you, if the head of the RIAA was being cheuffered between meetings and you were stood at the side of the road with your car after it has broken down, Will he stop for you? Will he lend a hand? Will he ask you if you want a lift or phone for a tow truck?

I guarantee he won't even glance at you and your car and just continue about his business.

Do you still see the ethics in allowing such attitude?

Do you see the ethics in trying to disallow such an attitude? He is a busy person and doesn't have time to stop and help. He realises there will be plenty of other people going by, and one of them is likely to help, thus doesn't feel obliged.
Don't see how this is relevant though.

XP professional - legal, because it came with the laptop.
XP office - not legal, but I could get a legal one because the university allows users to install it (even on home computers)
Adobe illustrator - legal (as long as i use it for university work and don't do anything commercial
Adobe photoshop - version 4 or 6 would be legal over the network. But I have it installed and hence it is not quite legal (to make it faster).
Games - Mostly legal, if not all
Notepad pro - legal. Bought it because I like it.

The rest is freeware, or demo versions.

I respect your opinion but in my part of the world (Canada), the court declared that downloading music is legal.

I mostly use WIndows because I don't have the time to learn Linux. I had it installed on one of my computers, then I put WIndows on it. I might use Red Hat or something like that so I can learn Linux and use WIndows at the same time. ALl of my friends that use linux say that it is a bitch to get programs to work properly on Linux.

For programs that I copy, I will often just use ISOs.

I wish I had the money to afford CDs. One CD can be over $20, that's three hours of work! I have to save every penny for school and buying luxuries like CDs would cut into my savings. Like I said before, if I could afford to buy all my software and media, I would. I hope that day will come

anyways I use GNU/Linux and when I'll get enough money I'm buying another system and shaping it into a Windows based gaming console. I'm all cool with Linux, but I need some of my favourite games on it. I've been a transgaming.com subscriber for some time, but it isn't just there yet.

I buy CDs when I really like the band, if I want to listen to something from someone who is already rich I just download it. although, I have not downloaded any music in a long time. the only thing I have downloaded recently was some tool songs, and that was only because I lost my real cd.
