Before i start prattling on about how The Sopranos is the greatest literary piece in human history and how study of it will be compulsory in the schools of the future ala shakespeare, how many soprano fans reside at sciforums? I'm worried there are not enough.

People who don't watch TV are missing out on an epic mark in history, certainly as oil paintings and architecture are the fossilised footprints of the renaissance, film will be what the empire that is the united states leaves behind for the future of humanity. This was a depressing thought not so long ago, it seemed as all powerful as the western world is, it will be laughed at as a cultural cesspool by future generations when compared to previous human moments. Its films have all been, when viewed from a serious critical perspective, very weak, with no chance of holding up through the rigours of time. Not so anymore, thanks to david chase and the team behind the sopranos. Interestingly not with a film but a tv series, that is far more impressive than anything the medium that is 'movies' ever had the potential of producing.
The sopranos I guarantee will be this historically significant, the characters are the fullest fleshiest realest 'people' ever 'invented' by man. Specifically tony soprano. His character is so complex that we as real people don't have any extra psychological attributes that make us more human than him. Other than the fact we are biologically real. He is a perfect mimmicry of a human being. Indistinguishable from a real person when judging by his complexity.
This series has already had critical acclaim, and a respected Doctor has written a book about the show titled 'The psychology of the sopranos' before the series has even ended.
But I don't think the public at large understands the magnitude of what they are witnessing. While the majority of its audience watch to see someone get 'whacked' or to see sex and nudity and e-mail complaints to hbo when they dont get enough, I'm confident its future audiences will be a lot more appreciative of just how amazing this series is. I suspect they'll be forced to be more appreciative, if they don't manage to adequately appreciate it they'll flunk out of college.

No seriously, its fuckin awesome, you are doing yourself a great disservice by not jumping on the sopranos bus.

    Random quote;

Tony: "Listen to me, this guy was a Russian green beret. He was in the ministry of the interior or something. He single handedly killed 16 Chechen rebels. Be careful."

    Paulie: "ok" *hangs up*

    Chris: "What he say?"

Paulie: "He said the guy killed 16 Czechoslovakians and was an interior decorator"

Chris: "Interior decorator? His apartment looked like shit"

I think its a great show..however sometimes I find a bit violent for my taste. For instance, the episode with the head in the bowling ball bag..hehe

Yeah I'm in australia and episode 4 of season 5 will be on tomorrow night, they're up to episode 11 in the states and I can't help checking on the internet to see whats happening, sucks, I'm spoiling it for myself but i just can't stand waiting.

Are you talking about ralph's head in the bowling bag? I loved that episode, ralph was a low life, I love how tony soprano beat him to death for killing his horse, thats what I would do.
It was a bit nasty seeing chris hacksaw ralph into pieces, but he deserved it.
Too funny when janice was fucking ralph in the ass with a dildo while saying 'you like that you cunt?'. That was so bizarre, it just came out of nowhere. I was like 'is she?... my god she is!'.
I found that more disturbing than ralphs head being cut off.

I've watched the shit out of the first three seasons, crammed the entire fourth season into about three days, and I've missed most of the fifth season. Only episode I saw was with Carmela's film club, and it looked like a fuckin' travesty. One Sex in the City was horrific enough; two is atrocious.

That being said, Paulie and Chris are two of the funniest characters on television - the episode where Paulie's stealin' espresso machines from the fake Starbucks is classic, and Chris's stoner ramble at Livia's wake is hilarious. Their interaction at Chris's intervention was great, too.

Anyways, a theory on AJ - he's the least interesting character on the show, basically a lazy lump of shit who doesn't do much. But, he's involved in a lot of key plot points. He was the one who revealed to Livia that Tony was seein' a shrink, he was the one who told Meadow that Jackie Jr. had been killed, and he was the one who answered the phone for Irina's fateful phone call.
