I just want to ask a simple question that needs a technical Answer!!

    Where does Thunder come from?????

I've heard many opinions such as Clouds banging together etc.
But i've never actually belived it, and was wondering where it actually came from

thunder its the sound produced from the spark

like a gas cooker sparker that gose tic...tic
    only meny times bigger

rise in temperature and electrostatc repulsion or something expands the air around it and the presure wave is the sound

It's basically a sonic boom created by the air being heated and expanding against the surrounding air. The air heats up to 50 000 degrees in less than a second, and the massive expansion (air is less dense as it heats) against the surrounding air (still cold) causes a boom.

    well, you're all wrong.

Thunder is caused when air rushes back into the space left when lighting vaporizes the atmosphere.

Here is my simple answer to this simple question. I would have to say it is from the sky

your answer supports mine...... I thought that when lightning flashes, a column of vacuum is created and after the lightning is gone, the air goes to the vacuum and causes thunder.....

At most it is probably a combination of the two with the rushing air having little effect on noise production. First of all I don't see how rushing air could create a thunderous boom and also the ionised track is very thin. There's not much rushing to be done anyway.

Thunder is created by the expansion of the air as it is heated rapidly.

Actually it comes from your mind. If you couldn't hear it you wouldn't know it was there . Your ears pick up the vibrations that send that signal to your mind hence you hear the thunder.

Thunder is generally defined as the noise energy which every so often emanates from a thundercloud region and not electrical signals in the human brain. This is why we can't call somebody moving barrells around upstairs, 'thunder'!!!

the 2nd bit is true, but it would still be there even though we were unaware of it, the ears pick up the vibrations, the brain defines it as what we call thunder, not a sheep bleeting or some other noise, the thunder itself doesnt actually come from the mind.

By another definition, "thunder" is a moving and powerful speech... Something which a clever lawyer will steal from his opponent.

Yes but the original poster mentioned clouds so he was looking for the answer to the meteorological question. Also this is an earth science forum! Smartass

Larousse Dictionary of Science and Technology:

"thunder (Meteor) The cracking, booming or rumbling noise which accompanies a flash of lightning. The noise has its origins in the violent thermal changes accompanying the electrical discharge, which cause non-periodic wave disturbances in the air. Its reverberatory characteristic arises mainly from the continuous arrival of the brief noise from sections of the discharge at increasingly remote locations, since the spark may be several kilometres log. Claps of thunder occur when the spark is, roughly, normal to the line of observation."

Everyone knows that thunder is produced by the little green men sitting inside the clouds, and that the clouds are really UFO's manned by a highly advanced civilization that breeds us to consume as food. :bugeye:

How many children have been frightened by thunder because they thought it was the roaring of some child-eating monster in the sky?

Or, if we want to get really retro, why not say it's Thor smiting giants with his hammer, or Hephaestus pounding metal on his anvil?
