I just want to ask a simple question that needs a technical Answer!! Where does Thunder come from????? I've heard many opinions such as Clouds banging together etc. But i've never actually belived it, and was wondering where it actually came from
thunder its the sound produced from the spark like a gas cooker sparker that gose tic...tic only meny times bigger rise in temperature and electrostatc repulsion or something expands the air around it and the presure wave is the sound
It's basically a sonic boom created by the air being heated and expanding against the surrounding air. The air heats up to 50 000 degrees in less than a second, and the massive expansion (air is less dense as it heats) against the surrounding air (still cold) causes a boom.
well, you're all wrong. Thunder is caused when air rushes back into the space left when lighting vaporizes the atmosphere.

spidergoat your answer supports mine...... I thought that when lightning flashes, a column of vacuum is created and after the lightning is gone, the air goes to the vacuum and causes thunder.....
At most it is probably a combination of the two with the rushing air having little effect on noise production. First of all I don't see how rushing air could create a thunderous boom and also the ionised track is very thin. There's not much rushing to be done anyway.

Thunder is generally defined as the noise energy which every so often emanates from a thundercloud region and not electrical signals in the human brain. This is why we can't call somebody moving barrells around upstairs, 'thunder'!!!

How many children have been frightened by thunder because they thought it was the roaring of some child-eating monster in the sky? Or, if we want to get really retro, why not say it's Thor smiting giants with his hammer, or Hephaestus pounding metal on his anvil?
