HI: :)
I got my driving licence nearly 27 years ago, but since then up to about a month ago I did not sit behind the wheel. Recently my dear wife has bought a Matiz, 1999. I am driving in the city - where I live _ and along the highway leading to Tehran from the west.
Driving is fun and at the same time a dangerous technique- or may be an art. I need to improve my driving know-how and transfer these to my wife who is also a novice. Any tips or driving"wisdom" :) that might help us to be skillful drivers - and at the same time cautious - are welcome.
P.S. The highway leading to the capital along which I have once driven makes me worried. It does not look like a highway, I mean with European and US standards. quack-quack. thanks

i always thought you were a woman

anyway,
be a defensive driver- always assume the other guy is going to make a mistake or break a rule so you have to be prepared.

all i gotta say is carful driving in winter
ive had 2 accedents in winter
once on xmas eve i hit a patch of black ice in some S turns, my car skidded left and right and went onto a guardrail and grinded it like my car was a skateboard and i went down into a ditch and into a field QUITE FUN, F-ed up the underneath of my car quite good

this year, when it was snowing hard, i turned too quickly in 3 lanes that split off into 2 and 1 lanes, spun right around and hit a snow bank, only about a foot away from the curb, no damage to the car what so ever, im lucky i didnt hit anyone !
boy pontiac sure builds strong cars :D
over 200,000km and its still runs :)

oh and little bit of advice, my car has a switch to turn it to MPH or KMPH, first month i started driving, somehow the switch go changed to MPH, so i was doing 110mph when i tought it was 110kmph :D
watch out for them switches

1. Get insurance.

2. Buy a tank instead of that car you own.

3. Only drive betwen 2AM an 6 AM there.

4. Always stop when camals enter the highway and allow them to cross, same holds true with terrorists.

Hi:
Cosmictraveler, I think you should travel more, you know what I mean. Or you should change your user name. Just a suggestion! thanks

I was going to say, drive defensively, but someone took it from me.

I'm taking my third drivers test this wednesday. I'm quite confident that I'm going to pass. The last time, I had a perfect test, up until the very very very end when I didn't yield to traffic. That kind of sucked. And the first test, I just didn't know what I was doing.

But now...now is different...

Drive semi agressive but with respect for other people, otherwise you never get any where.
Use you turn signal, check the blind angles getting hit by moron drivers suck and hurt quite abit. Migth aswell check behind when changing lanes to.

Cykelist are the enermy, watchout for them they popup everywhere.

eeeh [/b]A Canadian[/b] you could not see/fell the difference between 110 MPH and 110KPH :).

Hi A Canadian:
I brought up what you said at home. My wife said it is strange that he does not differentiate between 110mph and 110kmph.

I have been been driving for... egads... a very long time. I love to drive. I have only had one accident, being hit from behind by some fool.

The secret to success behind the wheel has already been said. Drive defensively and courteously. If you are in doubt of who has the right of way, yield it rather than charge into an unmarked intersection. Don't think that 10 kmh is going to make a huge difference in when you get where you are going. In the end, it really won't.

Don't let yourself get distracted in the car (like dialing a cell phone while driving in stop and go traffic).

Once you have more experience under your belt, more confidence and know the roads better, you can make certain judgment calls better on your own.

p.s. i pride myself on being a better driver than most licensed drivers i know without actually having a license myself.

gotta agree with otheadp

also, after a while you learn the length of your car. Then you can finally cut all those suckers off. If someone cuts you off, give him the automotive version of a pat on the back by gently forcing him into a ditch. Having a large american car helps a lot. Most stuff made before the gas crisis will do.

Make sure you have the gas. Wear your seat belt. Beep at everything in site. Beep at yourself if you have to. That's what I do, and people get upset about it. Go figure.

Other than that, there's not really much else to it. If there's no air in your tire, put some in. But don't blow on the thing with your mouth. No I never tried it, but I really don't think it would work.

If you are changing lanes, beep your horn.

Hi:
Silverback has a good point. He says: drive defensively and courtously! :) But what is defensive driving really? Any one can explain. thanks

also dont change lanes if you can see any cars anywhere, it's safer to way unntil all cars with in view are gone.
honk you horn when you start or stop to warn other people of you intensions

I've been driving since before I could walk, by the age of 8 I was behind the wheel, I love driving fast, slow, curvy, hills, snow (fun) anywhere!!.

First of all: Assume everyone else is an idiot. be carefull while your behind the wheel, dont be the idiot!.

Second, build your confidence in dirt roads, speed up and break sliding the car side ways, this will give you experience has what to do to avoid collision and what the car is going to do, be carefull don't end up in a ditch.

Third, women make very causious drivers, they drive slower than men, and not as agresive, learn from her! these traits specially during heavy traffic.

fourth, always wear your seat belt, you never know, when some one will run a stop sign or a red light. (specially in big cities)

Have fun, don't hurry and you will get there safe, whereever it is your going.

Godless.
