Yes, they should have told those kids to believe in something real, like a bland uncaring god who doesn't save them from themselves! I heard stories about this kind of garbage in the US as well, it's nothing new.

Teach them about the Old Ones and give each of them a metallic pentacle of the Elder Gods. See how long it takes them to devise cacophonious incantations and solstitial rituals to protect themselves from their cruel and insatiable masters. They might even give human sacrifice a go.
