a idea i had

alright, this will work, but i just wanted your input on my idea, though i am sure other people have thought of it already.

i live in a rural area, and cannot get dsl/cable connection, isdn is not good enough for what money i would pay, so my only option is satalite, and well... thats what my dad wants... but it is the only option.

anyways, dince they do not have existing software for linux (i will not give up linux for a high speed connection!!!) i was thinknig of using sci or csi or that windows routing tool to route the satalite connection to my linux box, as well as my ***mini-LAN***(all unix powered) then they would all have satilite internet connection.

also, i DO need high speed acess, i connect at 28.8 and it jsut aint working...... lol

Are you sure they don't have "software" for Linux? It really depends on the hardware interface between the satellite wireless modem and your computer. Usually such modems are external (I have yet to hear of an internal one), and sport an Ethernet port to which you hook up your hub or NIC. Also, such external modems (be it DSL, cable or satellite) can usually work as DHCP servers (the downside of which is that your machines would be assigned dynamic IP addresses every time they reconnect, so they wouldn't make very good web servers.) And last but not least, they usually work with a standard network protocol, such as PPP or PPPoE for example.

Although I've never had to face your exact problem, I'm pretty sure you can find a dhcp client for Linux that supports the protocol of your satellite ISP. Then it's simply a matter of configuring your Linux box(es) to run the dhcp client daemon upon startup. Just a thought...

have looked. havent found anything. i have also thought about that... but appearently you need windows software.... i will have to wait until i get it to hack around with it. though linux is accually pretty compatable, in my opinion w/ hardware...

i know they will not make very good servers... they suck for gameing as well. but i dont have many options.

also, the windows s'ware might only be drivers for the e-card.. though, like i said i have not had a chance to hack round with it :-/

i will tell u how it goes... though if it does work on linux, it would be a router...because i have a number of machines arountd the house...

lynx, i do have it working.it is jsut never up casue of the energy crunch. my dad doesnt evan want me to leave 1 computer on.. let alone a network of 486's.
