I would really like to know why there is such emphasis on a certain type of music defining who you are socially? Since when did music begin to catagorize people and lifestyles into labels. Especially these damn old heads with their stupid "devil music" thoeries. and who cares if "teeny- boppers" listen to white stripes and other quality music- maybe it shows there is hope in their close minded culture. Am i crazy for caring? lol

    exactly

you see i put teeny-boppers as a "culture" whereas you catagorized a music type with a label.

I think the worst case of this is with Punk music, people seems to only be "punk" if they listen to Punk rock. I'm not punk, but I listen to a lot of punk rock, I have known punks that only listen to rap.

I guess the fair response would be to say that they type of music defines who you are simply because if you really like a certain type of music, it's something that everyone can hear, so they hear the music, and make their judgement about hte music, then assume that the people that listen to it are such and such.

but I'm kind of drugged up on pain killers now(just had oral surgery) so I can't really think or type ...I don't even know why I bothered to hit reply, maybe later when my mind is more active.

The only thing that people should remember when listening to music is if they enjoyed what they heard. If the music they listened to makes them feel good then it has made a positive influence on them. If the music puts them in a bad mood or iritable then I would think that type of music wouldn't be wise to listen to. As The Doors said in their song"When The Musics Over":

    When the music's over

    Yeah, c'mon
    When the music's over
When the music's over, yeah, When the music's over
Turn out the lights, Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights, yeah
    When the music's over X3
    Turn out the lights X3
For the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
    Music is your only friend
    Until the end X3

    I got some friends inside
The face in the mirror won't stop
The girl in the window won't drop
A feast of friends, "Alive!" she cried
    Waitin' for me, Outside!
Before I sink, Into the big sleep
I want to hear, I want to hear
    The scream of the butterfly
Come back, baby, Back into my arm
We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground
I hear a very gentle sound, Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear, Come today, come today
What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it... X2
    Now, Now?, Now!
Persian night, babe, See the light, babe
    So when the music's over
    When the music's over, yeah
    When the music's over
    Turn out the lights X3
Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
    Music is your only friend
    Until the end X3

It is a interesting song to hear if you've never heard it please download it and give it a try. I like Classical music now but enjoy all types except rap, disco, and hip hop.

lots of people are just shallow and need to attach themselves to something to feel like their life has meaning. Why bother with personal development when you can let a muisc lable with an already established identity be the biggest part of your life

I think people who define themselves with a musicstyle are lacking character. Yes, I do think that.

Music doesent influence my entirely ; it may influence my clothing and attitude on certain points. But the genre (rap) I listen to does not make me go convey woman as bitches and such.

Others I don't know, I heard alot of teenage killers or teenagers that commited suicide listened to heavy rock while doing the act - thus the general idea many people that listened to rap think of rock is as satanist suicidal dummies

Plus all the blood and things in videos. For some reason I can't understand a slipknot song more than I can understand a twista song. I think they have more things in common than not.

    ok guys music..........................

Like religion/ race whatever it is a way to seperate and classify groups of people.

It is a way for weak/impressionables to feel that they belong. and a way for munipulators to feed.

It is a way for people to up there ego by knocking someones interest of a certain genre.

like anything guys its all human nature.......depending on which emotional inbalance a person has will reflect his path and actions towards others.........some feel needed some feel they need to abuse the old cliche oposits attract!

(I'm going of the point here now but I'll try to stear back in for the last strech!!!)

basically for the rest of us we enjoy an 'art' that is music......we have a 'flavour' that we find to our taste in some songs and not in others. Thats where it ends.

Music makes you who you are.....................NO!!!

everything inside your life thats close to you influences your life and makes you who you are................and if you decide that you want to make your life watching mr x...dressing like mr x..............and generally trying to be someone else then things can curropt and appear to 'define' but never actually define as the 'personality' is still there only covered.

Unfortunitly Music industry (hell!) and physchology have come so far now we are market'd and brainwashed every day..........most keep it together.....but the impressional will fold. These are the 'slim shadies' of this plannet

as far as music defining who you are....

I have met people who think it totally strange that I listen to anything that is not Rap or RB. but this person was really into the idea of everyone listening to "their" music. if you get what I mean.

Categorization = Easier analysis of market share.

Knowledge of market share = targeted marketing

    targeted marketing = revenue.

    Categorization = revenue

    T4, Categorization = good economics.

Categorization = exploitation and creation of sub cultures or counter-cultures.

    --
Music defines who you are, just as clothing defines who you are. Your taste defines who you are. Limiting yourself to labels defines who you are. It is not that serious.

    --
Who is to say the White Stripes create better music than the producers of Britney Spears? Explain to yourself why you think the Stripes better and realize the irony.

Some of the more serious and intelligent critics of music see music as what it really is: an extension and expression of culture, not vice versa.

Modern cosmopolitan music has no such direction since it appeals to universalism, novelty and easy access. With the rise of the industrial revolution music became easily packaged and easily forgettable. Those incapable of competing in the refined realm of classical, romantic, and baroque found a new market in simple 'popular' tunes. This simple approach allowed simpleton music, such as White Stripes to dominate, leaving value-based and meaningful music behind. Thus artificial meaning and labels arose that don't espouse any real social values, only conformist group safety. The punk, Hip-hop, and nu-metal crowds act as just that: group comfort. People need a place to belong so they uphold stupid ideals for it. The other genres are simply mindless entertainment.

    Regarding metal:

Metal has advanced far beyond the realm of simple death/heavy novelty and into a serious ideal, which is what attracted me to this rather obscure form of music. It has basically become the vehicle for nationalism and cultural/atavistic expression, even though that was not the original purpose of metal.

The black metal movement for example is highly political and neo-romantic and although many are idiots and attach themselves to this movement because they want to fit in, they are rudely awakened when their houses get attacked by terrorists. Many a band have tried to make a mockery of the genre such as Cradle of Filth, but essentially they lack the credibility and credentials to associate with more elite idealistic members. In fact, no genre of music has gone this far as a passionate soap box for a subculture. I would almost say that Black Metal basically takes off where the classical tradition left off.

    Suggested listening:

    METAL:
    Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
    Immortal- Pure Holocaust
    Emperor- In The Nightside Eclipse
    Graveland- The Celtic Winter
Graveland- Following The Voice of Blood

    CLASSICAL:
    Beethoven- 5th and 9th Symponies
    Wagner- Ring Cycle
    Carlf Orff- Carmina Burana
    Stravinsky- The Rite of Spring

    YOURE A SMART GUY!!

I listen to the music I like for one reason: I LIKE IT!!

There are so many things to like about metal music, that no other "genre" appeals to me. Simple music for simple people, I say.

Everyone is so fucked, who cares anyway? Trendy metal fucks are just as bad as poppy teenybastards. Fuck them all, I say.

I march to the beat of my own fuckin drummer...and he plays blast beats.

and200x and plastic are right, you should listen to music because you like it, not to fit into something or be labeled as something.

If there is a song you like, listen to it. I even stop at country songs sometimes because I hear a song I like.

and2000x, not my taste in metal, I like that 80's rock, but I am with you on the "classical", especially Carmina Burana. There is a techno version of that song that is really cool. Don't forget Beethoven's Ode to Joy.

    Highly recommend are some Celtic/Scottish:

    Clannad
    Three Pints Gone, http://3pintsgone.com/
    Loreena McKennitt

Sara Brightman is incredible! The old punk, Sex Pistols, Clash, are great.

Did you ever see my reply on the 'innovation' thred?

I think your arrogance in your definition of popular music is what makes your opinion invalid to anyone else.

    and2000x...

This simple approach allowed simpleton music, such as White Stripes to dominate, leaving value-based and meaningful music behind.

I dare say, and2000x, that the only meaning in the music that matters is the meaning that you can extract from it yourself.

Its not like 'meaningfulness' is a pluralized idea.

Thus artificial meaning and labels arose that don't espouse any real social values,

Were music labels ever supposed to have any social value?

A music label is an institution that produces music to sell to the public to make money.

Its about money, not 'social values'

    only conformist group safety.

No, its targeting a certain audience to make a larger profit.

The punk, Hip-hop, and nu-metal crowds act as just that: group comfort.

No, maybe they just like their kind of music
