Precognitive, but in an odd way.

Hello, I am new here. As a matter of fact, I'm impressed that this forum exists! I'll get right to it, and see if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about.

I am 29 years old, am NOT a 'mentally unstable' individual, and have a family with two children. I play many different instruments and could easily prove that I'm 'normal'. When I was fourteen years old, I realized I had this 'thing' with numbers. It was if my stupid brain was random or something, I could tell what numbers would 'come up', but there has always been a little flaw. My grandmother, for seven straight days, had me pick the state lotto numbers. We never had a jackpot, but did when several thousand dollars. Each number that I picked was off by either one or ten. No more, and no less.

When my religeous mother found out, she hit the roof. Never again had I 'played' with this sort of thing until last night with my wife...

Five times in a row, I asked her to pick a random number between 1 and 56. I told her to pick a number that had no meaning to her to ensure it was random. Each and everytime, I was off by one number.

Why is always one or ten? I never have dreams about anything related to this, and from what I've read, claims are false when it comes to 'using' your ability. For example, a lot of people say you must concentrate. For me, that's NOT the case. There is only one time of the day that I can do this, and it's just before bedtime. The day is over and the stress is gone. I swear to you, the numbers just JUMP in my head. In less than a second, I can see any number that I want; but it's always off by one or ten. Why? If ANYONE has this sort of ability, and you want to talk about it on the phone, in person, email, or anything, let's do it. I honestly believe that, in time, I'll nail the numbers dead on instead of being off by one or ten.

    So, that's my story. Thanks!

    JJohnson,

We need to do more testing to determine whether your ability is real or not, because at the moment you just haven't done enough trials to get a statistically significant answer.

    So, I propose 2 tests.

    Test 1

I have written down 20 whole numbers between 1 and 1000. Please post what you think they are.

    Test 2

In case numbers between 1 and 1000 are too hard, I have also written down 5 numbers between 1 and 100. Please post what you think these numbers are, too.

After you have given me the numbers, I will give you the results and the statistical analysis to see if you have done better than we would expect from guessing alone.

For a mythopath James sure has proposed a decent test.

Johnson - You're results are purely random. Even if they are true, so what it's random, big deal.

You're just looking for a pattern

It could have been "only off by five" or "only off by an odd amount" or "only off by an even amount"

Point being no matter what you were off by you could ALWAYS find some pattern to it....

    You're a pattern seeking creatures - it's your weakness.

Do johnsons test. You'll do 100% no better than anyone.

Johnson - Here is your control, my test results:

    test 1 results

    4, 56, 82, 34, 985, 90, 305, 21, 559, 8, 22, 669, 9, 23, 84, 18, 43, 934, 86, 954, 456

    Test 2

    23, 87, 100, 1, 83, 49

I'll bet I do better than johnson

Crystal, yes, you may be right. Yesterday I was talking to my best friend and my wife. We did some testing of our own. I was able to pick 5 out of 5 correct answers of two digit numbers from my friend, but only 3 out of 5 from my wife. I tried the E*ode.Com test and scored 84 out of 100. Last night, I decided to try this lottery bit again. Here are the results:

    11-17-22-24-28-43 was my guess

    10-18-23-25-27-40 was the winner. (Ohio)

Although they are close and off by one, the final number was off by three. I still have the ticket, but not one number was dead on. I believe that it may be purely coincidental, but in a way, they are too close too often. I don’t know yet. My wife and I played with ‘Wingdings’ we printed from the computer last night, and layed three out upside down. I was able to get them right every time, but it could still be luck or something of the sort. James R, I am going to do your test after I post this. I’m at work, so give me about half an hour to answer them. I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone other than myself here. I am just trying to find out:

    A. If I should continue further with testing numbers or shapes, etc.
    B. Decide if I need to be in a certain state of mind.
    C. Why my ‘luck’ is better with two digit numbers as opposed to single digits.
    D. If this is all a crock, and I need to find a hobby.

So, Crystal, you may be right. I’m a computer programmer by trade, and I may feel somewhat compelled to believe something that isn’t so ‘real’. Anyhoo, I’ll see what I can do for the numbers above James and post them. Thanks guys!

Ok, this is a pain in the butt. The 20x 1-1000 is hard. Really. I haven't a clue if this is right, but I certainly can't come up with them all right now. Let me show you what I have so far. Some numbers seem odd, but for now I gave up on the 1-1000 one.

The other, 1-100, doesn't seem to bad. Here's where I'm at:

    20 numbers from 1-1000

    323
    46(8?)
    75(2?)
    846
    73
    349
    427
    523
    468

    5 numbers from 1-100

    33
    78
    46
    27
    48 (or 84?)

If I can get home in time to kind of relax a bit, I'm going to try the pick 3. That reminds me, I wrote a random number generator that I have been working with if anyone's interested. You type in a MAX number and it randomly will generate 0 to your Max number. It's small enough to email. So, even if I am pressed for something that may not be there, anyone is free to ask for the application and 'tinker'.

Sorry to trouble anyone if this all turns out to be rubbish. I do appreciate the talks though.

    JJohnson,

    I can't mark test 1 yet, because you haven't selected 20 numbers.

As for test 2, you have tried to hedge your bet by giving six guesses instead of five.

Let's look at test 2 anyway.

The probability of getting any one of my selected numbers, or being 1 or 10 off the selected number, just by guessing with no psychic abilities, is 22 in 100, or slightly greater than 1 in 5.

The probability of getting two numbers correct (or being off by exactly 1 or 10) is much lower: about 5 in 100 or 1 in 20.

The probability of getting three numbers correct (or being off by exactly 1 or 10) is approximately 1 in 100.

That's with one, two or three guesses. But here, you were allowed 5 guesses, which means the chances of getting 1 number right are very close to certainty. The chance of getting 2 right is about 1 in 2 (50-50 chance). The chance of getting 3 is about 1 in 10.

So, I would not be at all surprised to find that a person guessing got 1 right out of 5. We should expect they will get at least that many. Getting 2 right would be no great feat, either. I would be interested in doing more tests, however, for 3 correct, and very interested for more than 3 correct.

    So, what were the results?

    My numbers for test 2 were: 3, 7, 51, 83, 91

Crystal was right for one of these (83).
Taking JJohnson's first guesses, he got none right. If we allow the extra guess, he got one right (84).

Both these results are what we would expect if no psychic power is involved.

Test 1 is a more rigorous and accurate test, so you might want to try that one too.

Hmm, if we don't allow the 6th guess then JJohnson acctualy got statistcaly less than average. . . though not supernaturaly so. That is, however, still a sharp contrast to supernaturaly high accuracy.

James - Seeing as how we've got idiotic concepts flying around.

I got one better than this nut, so now I'm claiming PSYCHIC DOMINANCE.

    GOT IT.

BTW - It was my plan to merely get a single one right - and I was able to do it despite the odds against getting only one right.

Its true! Crystal even predicetd that he would win, and he was so sure of the prediction that he only gave 1 accurate answer, a big gamble if he didnt have foreknowledge!

I have some dead relatives Crystal, can you put me in touch with them? Or maybe could you tell me when space aliens will come to clense the world in gods holy fire, and how i might construct a space ship (while subsisting on a diet of wheat grass) to go and meet them when they arive?

I'm way off but here are my thoughts. test1 697-398-5-989-23-78-19-98-18-3-789-93-183-339-51-701-6-313-83-11. test2 98-63-13-28-49. now that I've played the little parlor game.
