I recently bought a 40 gb HDD (Seagate Ultra ATA) for $90.

I installed it and tried to fun FDISK on it from my Windows 98 Boot-up disc. So I ran FDISK and tried to create a new partition, right when I got to verifying drive integrity it wouldn't reach 100%. I would go up to 19% then back to 0%, then up to 51% then back to 0%, it kept doing this for over an hour.

So I just rebooted my computer. I tried to run FDISK again and once I say [Y] to treat the drive as a large drive, the screen goes blank, then after a few moments it says "Error reading fixed drive."

How do I fix this problem?

MY HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

    Model: ST340014A
    Firmware: 3.06

    www.seagate.com/ is the company website.

I would suggest you get a hold of Seagate's technical support department. You are entitled to full service on that drive IF the drive is the problem.

Their are two possibilities that have nothing to do with the drive. Make sure you are useing an ATA cable, and try putting the drive on a differnt power supply connecter. You might have a bad power lead.

    Otherwise, check with Seagate.

yea I went to Seagate and ran the diagnostic software and the drive is defective.

I'll prbly turn it in and get a new one or something.
