    Re: Django, Eric Johnson

From what I've seen - no! A few years ago I went out and bought his tuition videos, I've seen the G3 concert (with Vai and Satch), and I also stole a clip of him playing "Cliffs of Dover" live (off Kazaa!). In all of them the man is obviously a perfectionist. In the G3 concert, for instance, he's ON STAGE with a fucking huge pair of headphones on so that he can hear his guitar perfectly! Great player, shame about his fucking obsessive compulsive disorder!!!

I never really got into him, although he's obviously incredibly talented. The guy certainly knows how to pick! It sounds like he's playing an ovation on some of his acoustic stuff. Is that right?

I like some of Allan Holdsworth's stuff, but it all gets a bit 'samey' after two minutes! I actually saw Holdsworth live about ten years ago. Luckily for me, my snoring was drowned out by the band!!! I'd say that my favourite jazz-fusion player has got to be Frank Gambale. The greatest sweep-picker alive. An extraordinary talent, and extremely knowledgeable too.

    DiMeola, Holdsworth, fusion

Hmmm. I wasn't paying attention to the brand of his guitars during his concerts. Ovations with pickups are really popular among performers who ordinarily play electrics, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm a Martin man myself, a D-12-35 with a custom head with real tuning pegs instead of those medieval monstrosities.
I forgot about him. He's very talented but the fact that his CDs are all in the "New Age" bin says it all.
Sorry, not familiar with him at all. My favorite fusion performer is Jean-Luc Ponty even though he's a fiddler. The bands he puts together do some amazing ensemble work and he's about as creative and talented as anybody.

    Re: DiMeola, Holdsworth, fusion

I've just downloaded a track of his called "Mirage", which I like, and another one called "Cosmic Messenger", which sounds a bit like early Pink Floyd did a fusion album! Sounds really good. Do you recommend any particular album? Or shall I just steal the lot?!

BTW - a good and accessible Frank Gambale (pronounced GAM-BAH-LEE - or something like that!) album is "Passages".

    Yngwie Malmsteen & Steve Vai.

I think Page is overrated. So is clapton. I always found Jimi Hendrix a much better blues player than clapton.

Both used to dress like twats, Vai dresses like a twat, Malmsteen does, but Bo Diddley doesn't. Hmmm, is this a theory in the making? Yes, I like it...:bugeye:

He's great, but one of the best GUITAR players ever? I don't think so.

Alright, I don't play guitar, and I'm not very familiar with most of the people mentioned, but at least nothing I've heard of Clapton compares with Zappa.

    Sorry to be redundant...

    1) Jimi Hendrix
    2) Frank Zappa
    3) Pat Metheny

These are all close... might include Ritchie Blackmore and Chet Atkins too.

I have to chime in on the Eric Clapton debate...

I agree he is over-rated. He does not have the improvisational talent of a Hendrix or a Buddy Guy.

Basically his style never really appealed to me... I thought he was much better as a songwriter and even as a vocalist than a guitarist.

    Al DiMeola

    John Mccaughlin

I am surprised no one mentioned him yet. How in the world would Miles Davis take on a 17 year old white guy from UK if he isn't absolutely talented?

    Wes Montgomery
