Sounds like the 3rd installment of some sort of film series to me. Something involving a secret society of worldwide "movers & shakers" trying to run the world - no doubt to their almost exclusive benefit. Maybe some manner of action hero thwarts the nefarious scheme by shooting the bejeezus out of a bunch of people & blowing some stuff to kingdom come... I've seen a TV commercial mentioning it a number of times, and finally paid enough attention to get the gist that bankers did not want whatever this was to happen. Sounded more like the aforementioned hypothetical movie plot than ever, so I finally looked it up. Especially large banks. Seems to me at first glance like a good idea to help insure that the people gambling with the world economy have the funds on hand to pay up if/when they finally roll snake eyes. I'm no economist, though. More likely just reacting in knee-jerk fashion because a bunch of rich fat cats don't like the idea. Anybody else think well - or ill - of this plan ?
I think it's one of those areas that is too complicated to really know the answer but since banks are highly regulated but are still often bailed out, I'd tend to be in favor of it. I'd completely favor a market approach (rather than this approach) if they (banks) were truly left for the market to regulate but since they are usually bailed out...then a higher capital requirement is probably a good thing. Again, the devil is in the details and so it's too complicated to actually know. When it's favored by Democrats and opposed by Republicans, that just tells me it's political and I'm more interested in the actual facts.
Neither. I only care about the results, "good" or "bad", as I'm just here for the show, and right now, the world is putting on a pretty good show. I sense a climax coming real soon.
