Evidence for scientific analysis is not.

There are many accounts of ufos splitting into subunits. Here's a brief account of what is called "ufo mitosis". The objects in the video appear to break apart into 5 smaller objects. I have no explanation for how this occurs, especially given my "piloted craft" position. It simply highlights the otherworldly nature of these denizens of the skies.

That's only what you think the video shows. It is an interpretation based on unsupported assumptions (of forward thrust/speed, altitude etc).
The answer to your question is really quite simple, therefore: the balloon/lantern doesn't have that thrust, isn't skimming the surface, and also isn't diving into the water. It just being interpreted that way because of the unsupported assumptions that it is moving quickly and close to the water when more likely it is still several hundred feet above, with parallax effect accounting for the majority of what you are interpreting as the speed.
The "splitting off" is entirely possible if, instead of a single balloon there were two released that were tied together.
Is it not more likely that there were always actually 2 objects in very close proximity, such that for a while the camera only interpreted them as a single object? When they finally drifted far enough apart from each other for the camera to detect both, it might appear as though one is "splitting off" from the other, when there were likely always 2.
In the longer video (that I posted) you can see what looks like 2 distinct objects when the camera first zooms in - around the 0:24 mark. Now it may be an artifact of the camera, but given that we later see 2 objects, it seems reasonable to conclude that there were always 2.
You simply can not tell from the video with the water background how high the object is. As shown in the longer video, and the simulation, it is in fact never over the water in the video, and only appears to be because of the direction it is being filmed at. Furthermore, neither a balloon nor a chinese lantern continue to rise forever. Lanterns rise while the flame burns, and then slowly descend. Balloons similarly will rise initially but will only rise until the atmosphere has the same weight.

I don't know why ghosts are now included in the thread title. Nobody here is claiming they're ghosts. Seems like another mocking attempt by James to insert an additional strawman. I guess he just can't help himself.

The first is a fake, the second are performers at an air-show, complete with flares.
This video was debunked on an episode of "The Proof is Out There"...

    Conclusion: not UFOs

Agree and I’ve stated a few posts back that I tend to lean on subject matter experts’ “experiences” and observations as holding more weight than a “lay person” who might make the same claims. The pilots who witnessed the tic tac shaped image that we’ve been discussing, they have never seen anything maneuver like that object did, and after thorough investigation, the Pentagon stated that they don’t know what that was. That renders it a “UAP” to me, until they can identify it.

Maybe there’s not enough information to go on to be able to accurately assess the image, though. It’s not the best video.

Some of us suggested that be left off the thread title and just go with “UFO/UAP Explanations” or something like that.

But vis-a-vis the account under scrutiny, does not stand on its own merits.
For every instance of UAPs allegedly splitting up, there are countless more instances of objects simply occluding other objects.

There is zero evidence to support the speculation that whatever is seen in this video is splitting up as oppsed to simple occlusion like what mundane objects do.

Ghosts and UAP have been put forward in this thread as the work of a ''higher power'' from another realm of existence and outside of our spacetime.
Don't know what to make of this one:
So, JamesR you have to put ufonauts in the title.

So now the thread is about evidence for ghosts and bigfoot? I don't think so..

Why isn’t the military (per country) alarmed by at least some of these sightings? If these are credible sightings. That’s the part that doesn’t make sense.

I think they are shrugged off as mundane objects/phenomena. Birds, weather balloons, chinese lanterns, etc. Much like they are here.

    IAP's--Identified Aerial Phenomena.

Your take on what's reasonable and what isn't? That's a ship that sailed long ago.

After all, you just finished saying you believe that aerial objects more commonly split in two (or five) than merely ... go behind other things.

Seems only logical that outlandish and fanciful posting is encapsulated in an outlandish and fanciful title.

Take that up with Q-reeus, he thinks ghosts and UPA have a common origin.

Nope..Ghosts and bigfoot have their own threads. If you want to discuss them, then go there.

Magical Realists thinks he's a mod.
Will MR be taking this up with Q-reeus over at scivillage. Will MR be telling Kornee that ghosts and UAP have not got a common origin.
How dare MR censor Q-reeus here.

If any of us were actually going to enforce a rule on what really belongs in this thread and what doesn't, then about 80% of your posts about various nonsense and folderol would go the way of The Fearless Guppy. You literally just got back from another temp-ban for not knowing the rules. So maybe don't get too uppity about what you think belongs and what doesn't, kiddo.

    Anyway, back on-topic.

None of my bannings had anything to do with posting off topic. They were due mainly to posting videos without sufficient commentary/analysis. A rule that James enforces selectively depending on the poster and the phase of the moon.

    In the meantime:

Sci Forums rule E3: "Posts to a thread should relate to the topic of the thread. While we accept that discussions often evolve over time, it is usually preferable to discuss tangential matters in a separate thread (a link can be included in the original thread)."

The idea that an alien culture is visiting Earth to me seems similar to the "God" story. We've all heard about "him" but no one really sees him. He wants us to worship him but can't be bothered to actually appear.

Why are UFO sightings always shaped like two pie plates attached to each other? Why do they keep coming back but never really present themselves or, on the other hand, destroy anything. They travel in an erratic manner but ... why? To get away fast? Just destroy us.

Why not land and walk around? Why come here in the first place? Why come over and over?

It reminds me of the "God test". Imagine a world in which there is definitely a God and describe what it would look like? Peace, no disease or injustice, etc.

Now imagine a world in which there is definitely not a God, describe that world and compare both to our actual reality.

Which one more closely describes our reality? No God of course.

Describe how all powerful aliens would manifest themselves and it doesn't resemble the flashing disc, erratic pie plate in the sky scenarios at all.

I have my own misgivings involving any alien motivations, but not because they are hiding. Because they allow themselves to periodically "get caught." Why do they appear sometimes all lit up and obvious to eyewitnesses and pilots? What is they're intention that they want to be seen, when they only elude detection afterwards? That is the limits of my speculation. I only know they are out there occasionally making their presence known and apparently watching us from the skies. Until or if ever we make contact with them, I resign myself to a sort of serene and zenlike agnosticism as to who they are and what they want.
