When I was young the U.S. landed on the Moon and that seemed like the most amazing thing that had happened during my (young) lifetime. I expected that whatever cool thing happened in the future would be involving space exploration. That didn't really happen. Personal computers came along and that seemed pretty cool but initially they didn't do a lot and were more a novelty. When the internet came along that was interesting but you had to work hard to find a reason to be on the internet initially. Later you could buy things but it was more expensive than buying locally. You could bounce around from one site to another to read news stories but it took a few years for it to really be useful. Now, I'd say it's the most impactful invention of my lifetime. You can buy anything, get it quick and at a good price. You can talk to most anyone in the world at anytime for free. You can learn how to do anything and can find most any answer immediately. It only gets better as time goes on. Do you consider something else to be the most impactful invention that has occurred during your lifetime? What do you think will be the nature of the next "big thing"? Space travel, unlimited leisure time, or something that is just unknowable at the moment?
I'll go with... https://www.history.com/topics/inventions/invention-of-the-internet The next big thing? Space colonization. But, that may take a while.
It could be something like just more and more people being paid not to work due to automation so that those who do work are doing something more fulfilling than what many are doing today. It could just be a massive education increase and a middle class increase so that people just get along better and think of the exponential improvements that could bring if everyone wasn't always battling everyone else. I suppose there could be a massive improvement in health care?
Several inventions have been prohibited to come out to the public. In the 70s I learned of the "eternal tire", a tire for cars that can last a lifetime, but the tire industry impeded its release, with the argument of several companies going out of business, with consequences as unemployment and more. My hobby is fixing cars, and I put my hands on every new car I buy just because I love doing this kind of work. Every year new mechanic tools are invented, and in my case, such is what impact me the most. Wrenches which can work better because flexibility of their structure and facilitating the removal of hard to reach bolts, such is a plus to me. Perhaps others look for inventions destined to change humanity, but such task, even if beneficial, brings lots of concerns, as genetically modified food, as an example.
as i am currently in theory alive i can only comment on things that have already been invented and i would suggest those same 2 things probably impact all people on the planet in a way that would be the most impact to their day to day money food & business the miniaturization of computers and the development of international financial transaction systems so modern electronic funds transfer and cell phones which both require miniaturization of computing technology cell phones & miniature computers probably control and run around 80% of global business and money if not more not to mention the medical technology which tat computing power has allowed to be created which has saved &/or extended millions of lives you could add electron microscopic computing which develops vaccines in which case hundreds of millions if not a good few billion
The Hydrogen Bomb: It casts a cloud of security and terror over our everyday lives MMGW** : It casts a cloud of insecurity and helplessness over our everyday lives ** the "invention" being maybe the hockey stick graph.
Absolutely. A solid steel wheel would last a lifetime. But people wouldn't buy them for obvious reasons.
Idk, I've been liking the app ''Calm,'' lately. It's a great little ''invention'' for meditations and it has a set of bedtime stories to lull you to sleep at night. Not the ''best'' invention, but I'm hard pressed to cancel it. lol
I just figured out that I'm not an abbreviator and when I'm typing much I'm usually doing it from a full size keyboard. I don't use idk, lol,'puter, 'prolly, etc. Call me rigid. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I really dislike ''prolly''...but you do seem rigid. It's okay, we all have our flaws. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Then if use one single slice and one twice-as-thick slice to make another sandwich you are eating an Fibonacci sandwich.
AI. I just discovered GPT3 and AlphaGo. If these two approaches can be combined the resulting AI is truly intimidating. You'd get an autonomous learning intelligence residing in the "cloud" and having instant access to all knowledge stored in the internet and able to read and write and understand abstract concepts.
