Besides losing his post-office benefits and not being permitted to run again, what other penalties will Trump face? Jail time?

Not from an Impeachment trial but jail time is possible if the Justice Department brings any charge or if the State of NY brings any charges or the State of Georgia. Civil penalties are possible as well.

Ah, gotcha. Well, this is getting scary for Trump. I can see civil penalties, at the least.

I wonder if he will encourage his supporters to intimidate the courts when his cases are being held.

It would be par for the course.

They know what he needs at this stage
There is no need to be too direct.

It is a horrible symbiosis between the conman and the played.

Which side needs the other more?

The Senate trial would be an ideal opportunity for the Republican Party to distance itself from Trump and Trumpism, if it wanted to do that.

All the recent signs, however, point to a return to business-as-usual for the Republicans. As the de facto Party of Trump, there's very little chance that enough Republican senators will vote to convict.

That's just it. The Republican Party doesn't want to distance itself from Trump. He is just the symptom. The Republican voters want what he wants and the Republican politicians are afraid to want anything else.

The idea that they would be unhappy with Trump is to miss the whole point, unfortunately. This isn't a problem that is going away anytime soon.

    It's not a criminal trial.
If it were, at least a couple of dozen and probably most of the Republicans in the Senate would be excluded from the jury, and have no vote - they are accomplices, complicit in the crimes being adjudicated.
Also under those circumstances Trump's previous trial would have included evidence, witness testimony under oath, subpoena power for the prosecution, and so forth. Trump would have been unlikely to survive that as President - for starters, he seems incapable of speaking at any length, especially in response to questions, without lying.
More like a trial of a minor official at Nuremberg, or one of the war crimes trials at the Hague, only with the perp's accomplices allowed on the jury.

There is no reliable way for the Republican Party to distance itself from itself, with Trump involved in a public forum like that. It's risky. The process of burying the W&C administration, getting the stank off of the Party and the perps out of sight, took a while, was done in controlled media settings where the Republican Party had (and has) near-dominant influence, and had W's full cooperation. (The invention of the mythical "Tea Party", for example, took a few months of continual television punditry pressure and repetition).

Too bad Twitter banned him, for we may never know what Trump's reaction will be. (until it happens)

    Do you tweet?

I do not, so it seems that I have missed much of Trump.

I don't post, just read. Yes, you've missed so much! But, I'm not sure if you need a Twitter account to read tweets that are publicized. Maybe I could view them only because I have an account. Hmm.

Alternative (previous suggestion): Arrest Trump as an ordinary criminal and have him tried before a jury of ordinary D.C. citizens, if senate fails.

    good alternative!
If citizen T did as Trump did as POTUS what sort of penalty would he face?
    • Inciting a riot that killed several people.
    • Threatening members of government. ( death threats)
    • Inciting the intrusion into regulated spaces.

    etc...
If an ordinary citizen did such they would face trial for sure.
The fact that a sitting POTUS did such only amplifies the crime.

Lol Not really, just many Trump melt downs but for what it’s worth, I liked that we (citizens) could get his thoughts straight from him, no matter how narcissistic he was. But as we can see, he didn’t apply a filter and became reckless in the end.

You've missed some deflections and bs and calculated dishonesty (including slander of private citizens, which used to be illegal but apparently is not prosecuted against Republicans any more).

The criminal stuff and the political high crimes - the obstruction of justice and the errand running for Russia and the administration packed with felony perps, the coordination meetings with domestic terrorists etc, the attempts to threaten and coerce vulnerable officials - happened mostly in real life, not on Twitter. The phone calls, for example, happened on phones and were reported in formal news media.

Also, you haven't missed the Republican Party - Trump represents it almost perfectly, with wide and solid Partisan support in the ranks and among the leadership.

That Party reached this current state in the early 1990s, as the fascist movement represented by Reagan consolidated its control of the entire Party; and has been gaining power but otherwise remaining essentially unchanged and publicly visible since then.

There's no excuse for falling in line with the Partisan meme that Trump "got reckless in the end" - he hasn't changed, won't change, and probably can't change. Likewise the Party. What you see now is what we've all been seeing for years now - in Trump since 2015, in the Republican Party since 1980.

So there's no excuse at all for the Hatfield/McCoy bs. Both Sides is bullshit.

The latest news is that Trump lost his legal team. It seems there was a disagreement about what defense to put up. His lawyers wanted to go with the argument that impeachment of a president no longer in office was unconstitutional, while Trump wanted to go with... wait for it... arguing that there was massive election fraud.
