Why is it not a 'simple' case for Trump to take TNYT to court for lies about his payment of tax?

Whether it was right or wrong on how TNYT obtained his tax records is another story and not the point I want answered here.

So, why hasn't Trump filed for a court action on the basis of 'obvious' lies?

I understand rules of engagement for public figures are different. In so called debates and on the campaign trail politicians are allowed a lightyear of leeway in their promises and comments on the opposition

On the flip side the public has a great deal of leeway to lie about them. As I understand the system if a member of the public or newspaper company is taken to court the defence would be, for both, along the lines
Well that's what I heard and it's my opinion
    Or
    Well it sounded true

Trump is not trying to convince anyone with a brain, he is only trying to fill his brain-dead supporters with more hateful crap.

    A) Trump's tax audit ain't finished.
    B) If inaccurate: Defamation is a cause of action, but not only would you have to prove the information is false, but that the publisher knew or should have known the information was false and defamatory. These are very difficult cases to prove ...

    He'd have to disprove them.
That would mean releasing the tax records he promised to release. He's not going to do that.

Besides, he usually wants to use court action for delay. He will save such a filing for when he needs the delay.

Trumps muted reaction shows they are accurate. The information on the returns shows why he wouldn't release them. The NYT did nothing wrong in printing the story, but the person who stole the returns and gave them to the NYT did break the law.
The returns show that Trump is a liar, a cheat and a lousy businessman; so we didn't get any new information from his returns anyway.

Doesn't matter, Trump called it ''fake news'' so he knows for sure, he can't lose in court.

Wouldn't it be convenient if Trump had a sudden illness to take attention away from the leak of his tax records, his dismal performance in the debate, the pending rape case against him, his steady decline in the polls and the revelation that Russia is mounting a similar disinformation campaign against Biden as they did in 2016?

I thought Trump had reached the part were he 'dies' for the sake of mankind. You know, just like his brother Jesus.

    curiously
The only reason I would vote for that arrogant prick is that he ain't started another "war".
I consider what Obama did in Libya and Syria to have been criminal murder of people who meant us no harm.

I've never heard anyone decide the political views of their leaders based on foreign policies, usually it's based on how the leaders are leading their own countries first and foremost. Odd, indeed.

    <--------anti war libertarian socialist(on a good day, I'm conflicted)

Ok: 'tain't nothing special, most combat vets I know are antiwar.

I caucused for Dennis Kucinich (universal health care)-----one of my right wing cousins said--"who?--that commie bastard"
"Yeh", quoth I, "That commie bastard---You would do well to not spend so much time listening to the radio show of that drug addled right wing nutjob."

For 2 years, Obama had a democratic house and senate. Did we get universal health care?-Did we get a living minimum wage?----The millionaire democrats are all smoke and mirrors. They claim glorious social programs, then vote their millionaire portfolios.
"Medicare for all" --- Medicare is administered by private insurance companies-------(more smoke and mirrors)
Anyone who thinks that Biden is better, doesn't know Joe(the senator from mbna).

It's only a flag. What's with the '' that arrogant prick ''? Don't let your feelings be controlled by a rag.
Perhaps you understand now why some don't like the Confederate flag.

Nope, I still think that being offended (or claiming to be offended) by a decorated rag is silly and stupid.
(give the devil his due) I do not like seeing the us flag being used as decoration by businesses, and left out in the rain or the dark of night.

Obama got millions of people on health care that didn't have it before, but that's not the issue. The problem, once again, was the Republican party doing everything in their power to stop Obama from doing anything. It's the same hypocrisy we have just witnessed with the Supreme court debacle.

    2 years they had
It's not that the millionaire democrats didn't give a damn for the people, it was all due to the machinations of those evil republicans.
