If your ladder was 35786 km high and extended from the Equator, then you be in a geosynchronous orbit at the top. Somewhat lower than that would allow you to go into an elliptical orbit. It would be possible to work out the minimum height the ladder would need to be to keep the perigee from dipping into the atmosphere, if you wanted to go to the trouble.That would put us into orbit, but would it allow us to ESCAPE the Earth's gravity well?
