While I am typing something fairly lengthy, occasionally a message pops up asking if I want to go into some mode, where I don't type. When I see it, my answer is always no However on occasion I am busy typing without looking at the screen. If this message pops up and I don't check no, it assumes a yes answer and locks the keyboard. How can I get the keyboard back? Whenever it happens, the only recourse I know about is do a restart, which is a nuisance.

Never heard of such a feature.

Do you know if it's a feature of the OS? Or the particular s/w you're using?
What OS are you using? What s/w are you using?

    Is it simulating FF?
Can you still operate the mouse while the kb is locked? If so, are you able to alt-tab or Esc to another window, and is the kb still locked elsewhere?

Mouse works. No keys work. I can change to another window with mouse only. I can close browser while ALL keys (including esc) are locked. The only way to get the keyboard open is to restart.

OK, so it supercedes a specific app.

So let's get back to the source. What exactly do you mean by this:

"...occasionally a message pops up asking if I want to go into some mode, where I don't type."

When does this happen? Only when you're in your writing app?
Where does this come from? In the app?
    What mode?
Why, in your estimation, would any app want you to not type?

The problem occurs (fairly rarely) while I am typing (such as right now) a message on a forum. Especially when I am typing some math material using Latex - particularly when I pause (thinking).

I'm sorry. I'm afraid that's just not enough for me to go on. You don't mention what the message says, or much else about it that could give us a clue where it's coming from.

The next time it happens I'll try to copy it. Unfortunately it lasts only a few seconds.

That's a feature that helps people with Parkinson's or an essential tremor to type more easily. It senses keyboard hits, and if the PC sees a lot of nonsensical or out of context repeated keystrokes, it asks you if it wants to filter them out. That helps people with Parkinson's type, so you don't see tttttttext thaaaaaaat lookkkkkkkkkkks like e e e e this.

I still don't understand why the keyboard locks if I ignore the message.
