According to Lexico.com, the use of "trunk" as the boot of a car is typical of North America, but apparently not elsewhere (or not popular elsewhere) https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/trunk it's just part of the evolution of language ... some of us are bi-lingual though and speak British as well as American English.
