If you don't want to be called a traitor, don't defend people that want to burn you alive in a cage.

The US has pulled out of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (ratified 1987).

In reponse, Russia is following suit and also pulling out.

Both governments now say they intend to build new "intermediate range" nuclear missiles.

So, another positive step towards nuclear disarmament, not to mention US-Russian relations.

I hope you don't mistake me for a Trump fan, but what exactly did you expect the US to do? Just sit back and let Russia go on violating the treaty at its own convenience and attempting to gain a substantial strategic nuclear advantage (or even the perception of such an advantage, which is equally dangerous)? I didn't see anyone in the EU or elsewhere talking about serious sanctions or any other alternative, so...

well firstly the Russian claim we broke it first with bush's movement of anti missile batteries into eastern europe. and according to the text of the treaty the do actually have a point. depending on the capabilities of the launchers they could have been a violation of the treaty. mind you we moved them there because of russia threatening countries there. also aren't you against Iran's nuclearization? the dissolvement of this treaty undercuts attempts to prevent them from seeking nuclear arms. i mean if the 2 biggest dicks that signed the NPT start ignoring it everyone going to push for nukes.

The anti-missile capabilities the US moved into Europe aren't even designed or theoretically capable of handling the Russian threat, they're in place to deal with states like Iran, which Russia has assisted in its quest to obtain said nukes, along with the missiles to carry them. The string of treaty violations is indeed a complex web but it starts with Putin not holding Iran back in the first place, then the US and its allies responding to the new threat, now Putin wants to ratchet things up once again. The US and NATO can't afford to let Russia even think it might have some sort of strategic edge in a nuclear exchange; if Trump wasn't cancelling this treaty, it would be widely considered as further evidence of his collusion with Comrade Putin.

In any case, Russia can't really afford to go down this path without greatly accelerating the crippling of their national economy, which is bound to happen sooner or later. It would be better if they go down with hundreds of half-built state of the art nukes rather than a few dozen working models.

Anything but this. Work with the EU to impose sanctions. Undermine Russia's sovereignty by supporting separatist movements within it's states. Commission some anti-Putin rap music...

Sure I did. My counter point is that Russia will escalate the arms race regardless of what the US does, either directly or through proxies such as Iran (escalation via the latter was the original justification for the European missile defenses). They're on the ropes and desperate for leverage, NATO can't afford to sit back and allow them to gain any.

Anything else. If Russia is bent on breaking the treaty, it should be on their head.
Russia's economy is garbage anyway, if they can't get coercion.
I doubt Putin would be confused in that matter. He has the reputation of listening to his "intelligence" guys.
    Which Trump just did.
