I believe that was directorial liberty. If it did in reality, would it not present a paradox in RW?

I don't think a time machine can physically move in space. It must remain stationary as evidenced by Taylor observing storefronts across the street change as time passed in reverse.
If the traveller wants to traverse space he can take a horse and buggy or a space rocket.

I don't believe the machine is able to affect the fabric of the univers and speed up or slow down exterior time at all. The machine creates its own variable "time envelope", able to reverse or advance time within the envelope. A "time bubble".
    =========================================================
    p.s.
An excellent movie about shortterm time travel is "Deja Vu" with Denzel Wahington.
In the movie Washington is actually able to physically change a previous event, saving lives.

Yeah, what I meant was that he needed the machine to get back to "here" in time. Wherever he travelled spatially in past or future, he had to return to the machine.

Although, if I recall correctly, didn't he opt to stay in the future with his future girlfriend? I wonder what effect his "unevolved" DNA would have on their potential offspring.

Um. Time travel into the future as already been solved. Fly at relativistic speeds in a loop, arrive 20 years in the future.

When we talk about time travel, we are usually talking about travelling to the past.

The destination isn't. It was the destination we were talking about.

Well, I would guess the spatial destination is exactly where you are now relative to the earth, that doesn't change, does it?

Programming a time of arrival is the key problem, IMO, although if the machine's temporal position is relative to earth time, one might be able to program time reversal in 24 hr increments.

A Caesium clock timer would be pretty accurate, no?

    But what will we find?
    As am I.

    "Relative to the Earth."

And why does your time machine - which is traveling through time - know where Earth is 46 years ago? How does it stay "stuck" to an Earth, as it steps outside of normal spacetime, to arrive at some coordinate relative to Earth?

Do time machines only work near Earth? If I fired it up while out in free space, where would it go?

Think about that for a second. You made a machine, and moved it in time, attached to Earth's gravity. Now you move the same machine to empty space and move it in time, and it's attached to ... what?

Sounds like a new topic for new thread.

If you check the quote, you will see my response was to Michael345's comment about travelling into the future.

Because it is spatially stationary and does not "travel" anywhere.
It remains part of the earth's travelling gravitational system. It just travels back in time along the earth's time-line (24 hr day), not a universal time line (indeterminate).
Spatially nowhere, temporally into the past or the future. During the entire 46 years the eventual spot where the time machine eventually will be never changed spatially relative to the earth. Why should it change after the machine was built or even while in use?
Nothing, but it would remain in its spatial coordinate and if there was no physical object in time at the starting point or the destination point, you might find nothing there when you arrive. Just empty space. And that might hold for both travel into the past and future alike.

You're not going "somewhere", you're going "somewhen".

It certainly does. It travels with the Earth.

It travels through space time. You can't separate them.

    The problem is, that's meaningless.

Look, you want to travel through the time dimension t, but remain stationary in spatial dimensions xyz.

I decide I want to travel in my regular spaceship through spatial dimension x, while remaining stationary in dimensions y and z.

How can I do that? There is no way, even in principle, for me to move only through dimension x. Why would it be different for t?

The universe does not know or care about discrete directions of 3 spatial axes. Travelling in any direction is always a combination of x, y, z and t. But not discretely. Any movement I make is an arbitrary mishmash of all 4.

The only way I can convert one to the other is to turn 90 degrees. And to do that, even in the direction of t, I'll need to be going very fast in order for the 90 degree turn to have any effect.

You can no more choose to travel "only in time" than I can choose to travel "only in direction x".

Right. On earth itself, the machine does not travel anywhere in spacetime, except where the spacetime frame of the earth leads the time machine, the machine is part of the earth's a priori timeline and remains stationary relative to the earth.
It can only travel back in time relative to the earth's timeline, not any other spatial coordinate.

Spacetime is not a single dimension,
Does that mean one cannot travel through the temporal dimension of time as one can through any of the other spatial dimensions of space?

Michael345. Time does not exist? It didn't, but non-interventionism; observership, means one would return to one's own time. It is only because we are alive (because death exists) that time is possible.

I've addressed this, twice, but let's try again.

The answer is no. You cannot travel through "any" of the other spatial dimensions. You can only travel through them all.

There is no such thing as "travelling in only the x dimension". You can't do it.

Why just the Earth? If you are using gravity as your "anchor", then the gravitational forces you presently are experiencing are due to a a combination of the gravity fields of the Earth, Sun, Moon, other planets, etc. So how do you remain "fixed" relative to all these field when the sources are all moving relative to each other? And just what actually serves as the gravitational "anchor"? Gravitational potential? This is a relative measurement so gravitational potential relative to what?

The truth is is that there is no "traveling gravitational system" that follows the Earth around. There is just a local gravitational field that is the sum total of all gravitational influences, and that field is always in a state of change.

    From DaveC426913
Almost any coordinate system is somewhat arbitrary, but given a specific Cartesian coordinate system, there is no reason why an object cannot travel in the direction of the X-Axis.

What is unique about the direction of the X-Axis that prevents motion along it or parallel to it?

    From WriteU4 Post 231
When you deal with a 4D (X, Y, Z, T) coordinate system you are working with a static universe. There is no motion. For example, consider a model with only two spacial dimensions & a time time dimension.

A planet orbiting a star & a moon orbiting a planet are each modeled as a helix (Assuming the time axis is perpendicular to an XY-Plane defined by the orbiting object).
Instead of motion, the (X, Y, Z, T) model describes static World-Lines. This is a very useful model because there is a field of well developed mathematics (Differential Geometry) applicable to this model.

Michael345. If time doesn't exist then why the change in the timeline? ☺ Time DIDN'T exist, but we have traction with non-interventionism.

Yes. Given an arbitrarily-chosen coordinate system.

The universe has not deigned to provide one for W4U's use.

    Sure.
How will you determine that you are parallel to it?
What direction is it oriented right now?

How about now? The Earth has rotated a fraction of a degree, So has the solar system and the galaxy.

You may not know of the details of a number of post I have made regarding the non existence of time
To many to go into deep detail
    Short version
NOW is the only moment in existence
    The FUTURE does not exist
    The PAST does not exist

If you like to read a great book about TIME try to obtain a book called The Invention of Time and Space by Patrice F. Dassonville which goes in great detail of why time does not exist

What is normally regarded as time is better defined as AGE

Let's go with the notion of time existing

I wish to go 10 years into the future (or past)

So we have to presume that there will be some thing (destination) already there

    How would that manifest itself?

OK let's not be so ambitious, let's go 10 minutes into the past. We at least know the past exist. We remember it, we were there.

But wait, is not the Earth of my past now my current Earth? Did it split into two at some stage? If so what at what intervals do splits occur? Where does the extra material come from?

I disagree. I believe we are moving through time (due to non-intervention) but that we invent eternal life (kinda what you believe. ) Your statement about "now" being the only existence makes sense and I agree with you on that. ☺

Not understand about moving through time ?due to non intervention?

Everything AGES (changes) simply because they exist

    AGE is not TIME

Since everything always remains in NOW where is this TIME to travel in???
