I take the lion's share of the blame.

It's my cursedly-interesting content. If I wrote less enthralling content, James wouldn't have such poor eyesight.

Curse my insightful mind and superior writing skills! Bad Dave! Bad!

Glasses for nearsightedness since age 10 (and a bit of astigmatism) . Over the last several years, the farsightedness has set in. I can still read without glasses, but with glasses, they have to be bifocals ( for a while I was reading by looking over the top of my glasses.).

Wait--reading glasses to view something at 26 inches? That sounds like something for which corrective lenses for myopia would be suited, not magnifiers.

Yeah, I suppose most people seldom find themselves needing to bring something much closer than ~10"--I tend to a lot (I do a lot of "close up" type work), but only because I can and I find working with magnifiers to be a hassle.

Also, having "hawk eyes" ain't all it's cracked up to be: the highly differentiated field makes contextualizing somewhat a challenge. Likewise, one may find oneself inclined towards a peripatetic lifestyle. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but most people, in my experience, prefer to conceive "home" as something fixed.)

Like last week she spotted a rabit down by the first fence post an told me to look… i saw it to… but i didnt thank it was a rabbit… i guessed it to be a limb wit a couple of brown leaves on it… she was sure it was a rabbit… i said use the binoculars… an sure enuff it was a fallen branch wit a couple of leaves on it… ahahahahahahah.!!!

My first eye exam was several years ago... an i got it done cause the BMV eye test lady had previously told me in a scoldin fashion that i Barely passed the eye test... an she just stared at me as if she expected an apology... lol... but luckly a diferent employee ask her a queston... an when she got back to me she just sent me to have my photo taken.!!!

The next time i needed to renew my drivers license i went to the eye doctor cause i figered i woud need glasses to pass the BMV test... after the exam i told the eye doctor about my BMV eye test experience… an the eye doc said my eyes were fine... an then told me to read a line of letters on a eye chart on the wall... an then the lower line... an then the next lower line... an then she said that i had just read the 20/15 line... an she said she woud write a note that my eyes were 20/20 an i woudnt have to take the BMV eye test… an i took the note wit me but didnt need it cause that time i passed the BMV eye test just fine.!!!

O well… that prolly wont be the last time that me an the BMV dont see eye to eye.!!!

I've worn glasses for nearly 60 years. I take them off to read my phone.

before u look at the sign get ready to close one eye and look directly at only 1 character in the street sign.(just a glance to focus intently for half a second[try slightly shorter time])
you might need to do this twice to get the full street sign name)
second time you glance with one eye look again only at the same letter and think about absorbing the parts of the name only that you did not get.
    probably the 1st character.
allow your peripheral vision to read the rest of the sign.

i have found this works when i am hyper from a long shift at work or a long night clubbing.
though having to read any street sign is extremely rare in either instances.

    visual processing type

i have been slowly reading aroound the edges of this type of cognitive processing for some years.
i suspect there is a relation to varying things(that contribute to the function positively & negatively)
hydration(water & salts etc electrolytes etc)
vitamin levels(excesses and imbalances and deficiencies)
rest levels due to fatigue or over excitement for the neural pathways and relative processing levels of the data.

A visual processing type which necessarily shapes one's cognitive processing, as well as personality. I postulate that it results in a "type" that is frequently mistaken for Asperger Syndrome, but which is markedly lacking the social interaction facets which define AS, while the physical and perceptual attributes are abundant in spades. And yet, these latter attributes don't even factor into the "official" diagnostic criteria for AS; rather, they've been "observed" by researchers studying those diagnosed with such.

But this is kind of a digression...

I too can see the difference between a bunch of leaves and a bunny from a huge distance....often better than my Lovely Lady Labrador. She has begun to listen to me when I tell her its just some leaves when she gets all excited about something a ways off that might just be a rabbit. My wife just asks as she know I can see it, whatever it is.

I often work under a binocular microscope, just got 2 more (Wm. Woodruff Gibbs) paintings in for cleaning and touch-up yesterday that will have me wearing my glasses and Optivisor for quite a few hours. I have a touch of "near - sighted astigmatism" that makes it much easier to work within arms reach with the glasses on. I have kept some of my accommodation that should have gone away many years ago...not sure why though. I get a headache if I try to see something up close for too long without my glasses.

Best thing about carrots is that you don't need spray tan to turn orange if you eat enough of them.
