Trump is in the same league as the rest of the Republican Party. He's representative of that Party, and the political movement that it embodies. The Republican presidential lineage - Nixon, Reagan, Bush, W, Trump - is one continuous and consistent lineage. There is no break at Trump, no course change, no revolution, no major changes in policy or tactics or agenda or power base or political support or anything like that within the Republican Party - there isn't even much of a change in rhetoric and style, say from Limbaugh to Trump.
The biggest difference between a stereotypical fascist demagogue - Mussolini, say - and Trump, is Trump's lack of a personal loyalty base in the military command. Of course he could draw a few suckups and strays once he had a line on the office, but that is not the same as decades of mutual loyalty and support through the bad times. And that weakness may take him down. He's made remarkable progress at getting a foundation under his air castle, probably with Russian and other support, but it's a big job and nowhere near done.

Thing is, Trump didn't build the Republican Party, any part of it. He took it over. There sat a fascist Party, without a demagogue - easy pickin's. But that's not as strong a position as having built it.

Otherwise, Trump is par for the course. They are all jokes, in a sense, with their parades and bullying and public rants and glorying in the fatuous adulation of their mobs. But when they win, they ruin - the wreckage they leave behind is generations in the cleanup, if in fact it ever is cleaned up.

And in the US case, cleanup would include the demolition of the Republican Party. Leave that Party intact, and America will have a fascist government regardless of what happens to Trump.

We need to identify Trump's troubles as Republican, in other words - the Republican media and support included. If we let the Republican Party shuck this guy as they shucked W - and already the media is filling up with guys like Charlie Sykes and Joe Scarborough - we'll be stuck with it.

"From this point on you are going to see a liberated Michael Cohen, speaking truth to power...Mr. Mueller, who I greatly respect, will have a lot of interest in what Michael has to say."

Trump's administration has given us a new phenomena - lawyers for lawyers speaking on behalf of their clients.

Well spotted. For me these absurdities are the new normal.

A bit like Trump is a pimple sat on a carbuncle.

But wait - that's not all! Looks like Lanny Davis is getting some heat. Perhaps next we will hear from Trump's lawyer's lawyer's lawyer on how his client is innocent of all the accusations, and is really a good person at heart.

One of the worst things about the neverending news cycle that is the Trump presidency is the rotating cast of dipshit lawyers from the ‘90s and early aughts who keep popping back into our lives and on our television screens for one reason or another. The latest addition is former Clinton White House counsel Lanny Davis, who has taken up the defense of Donald Trump’s former lawyer and sycophant Michael Cohen.

In the last 24 hours, Davis has rocketed back into the headlines following his client’s guilty plea, after which he told the Washington Post that Cohen has information to share with Robert Mueller about Trump’s knowledge of a collusion conspiracy. Davis also portrayed his client—a man who once defended Donald Trump by wrongly stating that spousal rape is legal—as a man of conscience who “considers a pardon from somebody who has acted so corruptly as president to be something he would never expect.” On top of that, he started a “Michael Cohen Truth Fund” on GoFundMe—apparently the chosen crowdfunding platform of fired FBI guys and convicted lawyers for the president alike. At this point, the page has already raised over $53,000 out of its $500,000 goal.

With all of this in mind, we should take a second to reflect on the fact that Lanny Davis sucks ass.

To start, any mention of Davis should immediately come with a reminder of his role in legitimizing the Honduran coup of 2009 that toppled leftist president Manuel Zelaya. (The U.S. government helped to validate the coup via then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s push for new elections.)

Davis lobbied on behalf of the Honduran chapter of CEAL, the Business Council of Latin America, which backed the coup. CEAL’s vice president said in 2009 that Davis was “trying, with his contacts in Washington, to help a peaceful resolution...Lanny Davis’s group is working toward assisting with their knowledge of Washington.” Emails released in 2015 showed that Hillary Clinton suggested the idea of using Davis as a middleman between her and Roberto Micheletti, who assumed the presidency following the coup.

And that’s just the start. In his lobbying career, Davis has represented for-profit colleges, dictators, union-busters, a company that insisted on putting additives in formula for infants, and—perhaps worst of all—Dan Fucking Snyder. As one lobbyist on the other side of the baby formula fight once said of Davis’ client list: “It is an illustration of what most of the American people think of as wrong with Washington.”

The New York Times op-ed by an insider and Woodward's book just add to the picture that Trump is completely unfit to be president. I wonder if any of his supporters will be affected?

Not his core supporters. He could take a dump on the Vietnam memorial wall while singing the Russian national anthem and they'd applaud him. "Did you see what Trump did? I bet liberal's heads exploded! GO TRUMP!"

BTW this is a real T-shirt that many of his supporters wear now:

it is a interesting cultural norm

    Remember this

that probably lost him a few key support people regardles of the potential satirical wit about the differences in what a "war hero" is ...
it shows him burning someone he supported in public for his own political position to better himself.
the military dont like people who turn on their own team for personal gain.
they were none too keen about being outted for shooting up media camera crews with dupleeted uranium
i doubt you would call that pilot a war hero
    though...
the USA civilian culture has been fed a narative of hero worship while having normalised endemic institutionalised Racism & Sexism for decades.

have you ever read any auto biographys of white WWII service personal who fought with African americans in the same unit when they returned to the usa and were divided up into rail cars by skin colour. on US soil.
that type of culture doesnt just disappear in 1 generation.
back then it was ok to knock your wife around
rape was mostly the womans fault
    etc etc...
the difference between morality of common society and polite society etc.
what was simply not done in polite circles vs what was expected as the norm if you didnt follow the way things are...

it is a massive shift in morality in only 1 generation.
Trump(presidency) seems to signify a homesicknes for that old morality.

though he is not judged by the same morality that nixon was judged by, and the republican party would never throw a potential election for moral image of th eparty.
they simply do not care for anything except power and that power is absolute.
so that has changed also(a little).
but maybe that "power is more important than morality" is because the old world morality is trying to fight against modern morality of the average working class american.

a black caught walking in the wrong area may get beaten up/raped or locked up on a false charge for walking in a whites only area.
a man percieved as a homosexual might get beaten up for allowing anyone to find out.
a women may get beaten up for reporting a rape because she should not have been out or dressed that way.
a white person might get beaten up and mugged for their money because they walked through a black area.

    of these 4 things
what has the trump presidency changed for the better ?

oh yeah, he also dodged the draft from what i have read.
used his money and power to buy his way out.
i beleive that was fairly common for wealthy people so it doesnt specifically make him special in that regard, maybe more soo a symbol if anything and not for any anti-war anti-draft type thing.
i am anti compulsory military service. i think it breeds psychopaths and murderers and sadists into civil society.

Well, he's been doing that for the past 20 years or so. Anyone who suddenly decides "That's just over the line! I am done with him!" hasn't been paying attention.

They haven't been paying attention - if that's their genuine situation - to the Republican Party, for thirty or forty years.

And consider who we're talking about - the professional media people, the people whose job it was to pay attention, are among them.
