    I guess the origianl poster thinks "cultural history" began in the late 18th century.

    Here's a clue for you all. The walrus wasn't historically ignorant . Nor did he shit in the water like an enraged hippo, blaming his rage on the animals that were less equal than others.

    There might be lesson there, but some how I doubt it.

    I do not know what the heck you talking about. There are only 40 posts before yours & they are not all mine. You can post cultural history here & I am 98% confident I will be glad for it.
    There are posts concerning pre 18th century & may be more later. Why don't you contribute some? I liked a recent post concerning pre 18th century.
    I try to vary the content & will continue that.

    Sorry. I'm sick and grumpy. Sometimes I go off before I think about it because I hurt.

    And frankly, half the time I see the name of the last poster to the thread and avoid reading it because I know the poster said something stupid. In my not so humble opinion.

    If you go to google, type "sauna", and then hit images, you'll get a lot of pictures that look something like this:

    Most of those images are bit more rustic than what I grew up with, but then they are most likely older saunas in Finland, while I grew up in Northern MN, using saunas built later by immigrants.
    The sauna we had was actually built in to the back corner of our older detached garage. Just a outer changing room, and the sauna proper. Nothing fancy; bare masonry walls, cement floor, two tiered bench of gray weathered wood and a metal firebox with the stones on top. It had a single cold water faucet, and we just used an old sauce pan as the "dipper" to throw water on the stones (one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the upper bench, throw about 1/2 of a full saucepan worth of water on the stone, sit back, and wait for that wall of moist heat to hit me). It also doubled as a way to heat up water for cleaning up and rinsing off.
    Our neighbors across the road had a stand-alone building sauna as did one of my uncles. My other uncle went "fancy" and built his sauna into a corner of his basement, used an electric stove, and added a shower head with both hot and cold water (such luxury!).

    I believe this was taken from a photo shoot when they were filming the "Thomas Crown affair".
