C'mon--you won't watch this? I'll concede it doesn't match his 1977 performance on Satie: The Early Piano Works Vol. 1. There he plays Gnossiennes 1-3 over 13+ minutes; most do 8 to 11 minutes. I've tried to play in his manner, but that timing takes extraordinary discipline. Either way, it's cool to be able to watch him.
You're right, I will make the odd exception, for performance arts and documentaries of reliable provenance. In my first draft I wrote: "I don't watch shit videos from YouTube", then deleted the S word. I should have replaced it with something, clearly. Thanks for this by the way - it's really good! (I don't know Satie, but my son used to play a piece from Gymnopedies.) Very calming: the perfect antidote to idiotic propositions on discussion forums.
You should really check out his early piano work--"Pieces Froides" esp. Unfortunately, a lot of pianists don't quite "get" what he was aiming for, and play way too swiftly. Whether or not he was familiar with Balinese Gamelan remains unknown, but, while he didn't write/play with alternate tunings, he employs dissonances and heavy use of the sustain pedal in such a manner that interference beats can be discerned when performed at the appropriate tempo.
I see the mods have kindly given us our very own thread to pursue this. You are a piano player, I gather? I'm afraid I don't play, apart from picking out a few short phrases with my left hand to help me learn to sing a new piece - my sight-reading is not great.
