It seems an inevitable thought. It occurred to me, too, at some point.

I figure I'll just leave it alone unless it comes up.

It just seemed a possible, plausible and possibly probable action sequence.

I'll look into the German news----------- links?

That's an interesting idea. He's benefits most from the coup. I wouldn't put it past him. It's a nice tidy way to get rid of your opposition. Others before him have done the same thing for the same reasons.

This makes me wonder (and fear) how long it will be before the ruling caste in the US decides Turkey needs a double-barreled dose of "Freedom"...

Here are some scenes from the attempted coup. In total 208 poople including 145 civilians have been killed and 1491 people have been injured. 24 pro coup soldiers were also killed. From the civilians killed, two are Erdogan's very close friends and one is brother of a top government official so possibility of a staged coup seems out of question!

Killing Erdogan first [as some here suggested for the next coup

] would be the worst step to take because it would automatically start a bloody civil war in Turkey and the coup generals seem to be more right-minded than those who suggest it here!
The coup seems to have been quite well-planned but failed due 1- a change in its timing when it was taken ahead from 3:00 am to 09:00 pm due to an intelligenc breach, 2- Erdogan moving very fast as soon as he got the news, 3- people going out to streets in millions showing they are ready to die for defending their democracy, 4- some top army commanders vowing allegiance to the government on air, 5- putchists failute to cut off live tv and radio broadcasts after their unsuccessful attack of Turksat sattelite station, 6- widespread use of social media by Mr. Erdogan and people supporting him to organize and the failure to cut off the internet, 7- the big blunder of attacking the parliament and killing unarmed civilians without mercy...and many other factors..

It seems they have tried to kill Erdogan. There was an attack of some special forces against the hotel where he had his vacation. A Russian (Crimean) source http://colonelcassad.livejournal.com/2851515.html which I have liked for giving a lot of factual information during the war in Donbass, so that I see no reason to doubt it in a case where much less prejudice is to be expected. So that I no longer take the theory of a complete fake seriously.

It is clear that there have been preparations on Erdogan's side long before, with lists of Gülen supporters everywhere, and in particular in the justice system where he was strong, prepared. They have been used now. Of course, once such a pretense is offered for free, it would be stupid for Erdogan not to use it.

I think that security leaches on above sides seem plausible. A leach from Erdogan side may have forced to putschists to act premature, without sufficient preparation, leaches from the other side may have allowed Erdogan to prepare for it.

another scene of a civilian who lies before two tanks to stop them from advancng and they run him over:

Scenes of fighting over and in the hotel where Erdogan had been staying:

I still believe the objective was not to kill him but to take him hostage and then put up a trial show and hang him like they did with Adnan Menders and they are now doing with Morsi of Egypt ..

Brief: the dominant public opinion in Turkey is that such a coup could not be staged withou knowledge and approval of the US intelligence. Some politicians have also voiced this idea... Your Thoughts?
