Putin's rule has been characterized by Thomas Friedman as rule by sugar highs. Putin has gone from one sugar high to another in order to distract fellow Russians and feed the national ego. "Putin stupidly went into Syria looking for a cheap sugar high to show his people that Russia is still a world power. Well, now he’s up a tree.
