I was just wondering what the best places are to buy PC's and laptops. I am planning on getting a new laptop soon and possibly a new desktop PC. Now that I have really experienced Dell Tech Support (crap). I am not sure I want to buy another Dell computer.

You should really put Sony on there. Sony Vaio's beat half of the laptops up there any day.

Oh...and if I see one vote for Compaq I am going to scream!

IBM laptops are expensive, but worth it, Apples are good too.

while sony's viao's are ok,(the laptops are not bad, and they are certainly light!), I have had tons of problems with them over the years. not the most rock solid of machine over the long term

My roomate's Sony one day lost track of the operating system. One of the few time wqhen someone told me "I didn't do *anything*" when they were actually telling the truth. The Restore CD that came with machine had two options "restore w/o reformatting" and "restore w/ formatting" selecting either option then gave you an option to choose which drive you wanted to refomat :bugeye:

And gateway has been known to use refurbished parts in their "new" machines

Dells are so painfully cheap right now w/ rebates and online coupons that I have to keep myself from filling my credit card and my living room with dozens of machines searching for interstellar life or crunching RC5 numbers. Push that internet bandwidth baby!

I have an Apple, and I love it. bought it used, so I didn't have to pay an obseen amount of money. hopefully IBM's 970 chip-based Macs will be here by the end of June, and I'll buy my first NEW mac in about 7 years. right now the desktops are not worth the money. the laptops are f'ing sweet still (though IBM's T40 kicks some serious ass, too....)

edit: keep in mind that Windows XP currently has a bug in it which can cause applications to take 10x longer than they should to launch. MS has a fix, but hasn't released it to the public (they are waiting to bundle it with the next service pack. If you have Win XP, call MS support, and ask them to send you the patch). The fix should be available to the public in the next month or so.

I say IBM, probably because I grew up with them and they're the only brand computer I ever had. But they are nice. But I hate Macs, I hate the mouses, I hate the system, but they are colourful .

I choose to abstain from voting since Apple wasn't an option.

Once you go Mac you never go back.

heh, you just named 3 companies my imediate family works for. if you are looking to buy a large order from any of these, I'll get you in touch w/ the sales dept (they do kick-backs for employee-introduced sales).

I think it's a minimum $50,000 order before the employees see anything, though.... so servers or something

I have had nothing but bad luck w/ compaq. I do not recommend them at all.

what speed in the Athelon in the Compaq? what is in the Toshiba? what speed? Price difference? Graphics card? memory type? hard drive size/speed?

AMD chips are, IMO, great. Currently on par w/ the P4 in performance, though much, much cheaper. the only thing that Intel has going for it is HyperThreading, and a HT processor is freakin' expensive as hell. I'd go w/ an athelon processor for now; we'll start seeing 64-bit desktop machines soon (AMD's Opteron is already available), so I'm personally waiting for a few more months. then new fast as hell and upgradeable machines will be out, and the current line of 32-bit chips will drop in price even more!!

river-wind, i was reading the above posts and all these machines are great/or at least near great but i was wondering 'HAT ABOUT THE PROCESSOR' and then you answered my question with the amd as have just purchased a pc with amd xp2200 no hd or os for $340.00. best deal was at bestbuy for a maxtor 40 gig hd with a $50 rebate for only $29.99.

Toshiba is celeron 1,8 Ghz , and 14" lcd with 16Mb Geforce , Compaq 2 Ghz xp+ , 15" lcd and 64Mb ATI card , and the price is more or less the same , I have doubts about buying Compaq cause lots of people are not satisfied with them , however toshiba in my opinion costs more then it should , price is around 1500 € (or less)

    gateway

I bought a gateway w/ 40 gig hard, 1100 MHz processor, 256gb mem. blah, blah, blah. The damn thing cost me $2198.00 including delivery. I was on the phone with tech support on an average of twice a week for the first year until I finally talked them into sending a tech to my house to do something about it. He replaced the hard drive, sound card and video card, but I lost all the music I'd downloaded from the net, and half of the features that I had ordered with the puter. For the next year I was on the phone with tech support at least once a week trying to find out why it was still crashing twice a day and was slower than my old 200. They finally, after several threats, replaced the entire tower and all its components with a "new" one. It was slower than ever and still crashed whenever it was in use for more than an hour. I am now on the phone with tech support, this is my last year of the extended warranty, several times a month(I'm tired of spending all my time on the phone) because it is still a peace of s---. The last time I called the tech he told me that my proplem is, " Windows ME is garbage an you should switch to XP." Why didn't they tell me that a long time ago? I want to return it, but they want to pro-rate it so low that It wouldn't pay for a decent drunk. I am going to go to my local internet provider and have them build one to my specs, and tell garbageway that if they don't refund my full purchase price I'm going to sue their ass off. Does anyone know if there is a lemon law for computers?

By the way I repair computers as a part time job

None!, build it for your self is the best way to go! You know what your putting into it (not like all the crappie parts the big brandname computer sweetshops put in) and you know who to go to when something goes wrong (your self!)

I would like it the next time someone puts up a poll like this they have "Homemade" as a option.

The processors bullshit! Most of the brand name companies put in a p4 for marketing but then put in SDRAM (to make it cheaper), which makes the machine perform like a p3!!! they put in slow 5400rpm hard drives with Ultra 33, 66, 100 standard not 133. the Graphic cards are always worth crap, no wonder people are buying consoles. Those computers are made as cheapy as possible and perform at par with the price!
